Aqua Remora Nano nog

I've had an Aqua Remora Nano protein skimmer on one of my smaller tanks for about two weeks now. When I received it, it came with a Maxi-Jet 900. I used an MJ1200 I had lying around instead, thinking it wouldn't hurt to use a pump that pushed more water.
So far, the skimmer has been pulling a lot of water and very little skim mate. The skimmer cup fills at least once a day and sometimes overnight. The collection cup is the highest I can have it.
In the beginning, I thought the skimmer needed some breaking in, but it should be broken in by now.
Does anyone know if this behavior is due to using an MJ1200 instead of the included MJ900?
Thanks!

most certainly it is. You are pushing more water/air then it can handle!

Thanks Gresh. I just replaced the MJ1200 with the MJ900 the Remora Nano came with, and after 10 minutes, it is already producing a nice foam :)

Just two quick suggestions about HOB skimmers:
1. A mesh-mod on a maxi-jet, while not easy, is GREAT! I did it on my 1200 and it absolutely rocks!
2. Another nice thing to do with HOB skimmers, or any skimmer, is to make an external collection cup. You can drill into the cup, add a small threaded-barbed hose extension and attach some hose with a valve. Then, instead of removing the cup, you just turn the valve and drain into a separate cup.

Hope this helps.

Since remoras create bubbles buy impacting a stream of water rather than chopping air fed through a venturi, how does a mess mod help?

I am too lazy to do a mesh mod :) I have heard that they rock socks though.
I didn't want to drill this collection cup because I prefer to just take out the cup and empty it out at the sink. While I am doing this it gives me the opportunity to clean the riser tube, which should be kept clean.

Hope this helps.

Does the mesh mod work with the Remora??

Yes and yes. The mesh mod works by increasing the "chop" of your impeller. So, it definitely will help with your remora. BTW, your Remora does have a semi-venturi setup though not a true one of course. The mod is not as easy to do without the "disks" you get with a sedra or similar pump but it can be done. The best way to do it is to make a disk, replace the existing "paddles" on the impeller and then add the mesh, but I've done it without a disk by just cutting down the impeller paddles slightly with a dremel.

Dyngoe, not sure you are right here. The remora instructions specifically say "The remora is NOT designed to be used with the venturi accessory...Do not use the venturi attachment that comes with the pump". If there is no air at the impeller, then how can an impeller mod work?

The spray injection actually occurs inside the skimmer body, not the pump -all the pump does is move water into the skimmer

We know that.. We just don't know what's the point doing the mesh mod on the pump.

So what I am saying is probably won't do anything.
If a skimmer like a CPR BAK-BAK or something similar were being used, with a true venturi, than a mesh mod would significantly boost performance.

DOH!

You are correct. I did not know about the aquaC pseudo-venturi valve. It's actually closer to a true venturi you would find on a becket skimmer. Anyway, I wonder if adding a pre-pump venturi would be bad? If you want to give it a try, you can borrow my MJ1200 with the mesh mod and give it a shot. Who knows.
