Baby clown food

I got two gold stripe maroon clowns from AC this past weekend - they’re about 1 in long and they seem to be rejecting all the food I try to feed them. I tried frozen brine shrimp, TDO pellets and cyclops. They go after it and try it, but then spit it out. AC said they were feeding frozen brine shrimp.

They’re active and seem happy. Any suggestions on what I could try to feed them?

In desperation I went to Petsmart looking for anything and I bought some Hikari micro pellets and some flakes. Tried the flakes first and it was a definite no. Then, I tried the micro pellets and they worked! Now, they accept all the pellets I give them including TDO and PE Mysis. It was definitely strange but before that, they would spit everything out.

Kim Pattison what’s the rate of growth for baby clowns? How long does it take to go from 1in to 2in? Rough estimate, I know there are many factors.

I would notice my clowns “spitting” out my ocean nutrient pellets at first, if I soaked them in a little water for like 5 min to soften them I noticed they wouldn’t spit it out. I think that behavior is a response to the food being too big

Kim would be the expert here but mine has taken almost a year... and that's for the dominant ones... I have one that still a neutral 1" squirt

Sorry did not see question until now. To grow 1 to 2 inches I would say a year. Males are ready to breed in about 6 months. Females take quite a bit longer at close to 2 years.

My maroon started of at 1/2” in January and is 2 1/2” only 6 months later. He’s my favorite fish because of all his antics. He is hosting in a huge shell and spends the day polishing it with his belly and sweeping out the sand with his tail and pebbles with his mouth.

I think with fish from aquatic collection they add garlic to the frozen brine so the fish may just be used to more flavor than frozen cubes without the garlic oil added

They are starting to nest. They will start getting more aggressive. They will lay on the shell. It can take a while for them to actually start laying. But the behavior is preparing for eggs.

It kind of bugs me that there are animals that will literally starve themselves to death when there is food there. Maybe they just don't recognize it as food?
