I'm with Jeff I've been using the stuff with styrene for years and have had no problems. I did however see a bunch of the black eggcrate at a friends shop, and may try to woo him into giving me some.

We have no way of knowing if that fire retardant is in our egg crate, just that it could be. With all the environmental changes in the last 10 years, all the fire proofing chemicals have changes a great deal. That just shows you that the styrene is not the problem, but maybe something added like I said earlier. Then, there could be differences between brands, etc.
