I got some LR today. There are a lot of algae on the rock so I powerwashed and going to let them dry under the sun. Should I cook the rock for couple months? Does cooking rock really help with the unwanted algae later on?
Yes, it (bleaching) was done to my rocks as well. The rocks were a little white for my taste for a while, but now they look great after algae has grown on it and all.
After mine were bleached, I rinsed them out, and let them dry. I repeated this 2-3x, and after that I took a tub of hot water, placed the rocks in, and added Prime. Bleach be gone
Don't be that afraid Phong. That was how we used to clean the decorative rock in fish only tanks a long time ago.
1) Fill a container (trash can) with the rock. Dump in a decent amount of bleach and let sit for 24 hours.
2) Rinse all of the rock off dump out the bleach water in the can and fill with fresh water and let sit for 24 hours
3) Bake in the sun for 24 hours
Continue to repeat steps 2 and 3 until the bleach smell fades. You can also add a bottle of amquel to the water at some point.
I added the clean rock to a temp tank connected to my main system (for about a month) to get some bacteria growth on it
They will be ghost white for a while but color up pretty quickly
I'm afraid using chemical but I can give that a try. How much bleach did you use Bryan? So you just soak the rock overnight then wash and dry under the sun several times??
Mike, I don't like LR anyway. The last 3 tanks I setup, I always use dead rock.
Sorry. I ptobably made it sound like that. No I added water too. I am guessing about a 7-10/1 or so water to bleach mix. I just kinda of eyballyed it and didn't really use precise measuring. If you use less bleach I would suspect you would need to soak it longer.
