Surprisingly, all of the corals we left in the tank that I blacked out for 5 days look fine, no issues at all.

Not super surprised, but good to know! I think the stability that your huge system has helps a lot with this. In a single tank the uptake of alk is going to slow way down and possibly cause problems depending on dosing etc...
