Curing Freshwater Ich

I recently convert my little 10 gallon to freshwater. It just has a few plants and some guppies in it.

Unfortunately, the guppies have ich. I know it's a different organism than the saltwater kind... does anyone have recommendations on how to treat for it?

Quick Cure?

She has plants and IIRC Quick Cure has Formalin and Malachite Green in it.

I don't think there is a plant OK ich cure :( But it's been 10 years since I played freshy so I could very well be wrong :)

salt + plants = dead plants

salt does not cure FW Ich.

Ummm, if possible remove the plants or better yet treat the fish in a QT. ;)

No my memory is wrong ;) I did say it's been 10 years since I have dealt with it

Now that has sparked my memory and IIRC while sodium chloride works, it's not as effective as Formalin/Malachite Green (Quick Cure, etc). None of those are usuabel with plants though. QT will be a must.

Magnesium, not sodium chloride?

Depends on the plants really, right. IIRC some are very salt intolerant.

FWIW I used to manage the FW/planted tank section of the store I worked at, but boy oh boy have I forgotten that stuff.... Second I got promoted to SW manager, I stopped thinking about FW all together.

Stick with the salt, it works wonders. I have used Maracide and Aquari-sol with plants with out issue, but IME salt is very easy on the fish, use a heaping tablespoon for every 5 gallons.

If the plants (all I have is some green carpet moss right now) can't tolerate the salt, I can totally move the fish to a QT tank no problem.

How long would you recommend I treat them?

Thanks, guys!

At least two weeks, that will give your main tank a chance to cleanse.
