Cali Kid Corals

Double Mogul Lumenarc 3's have arrived!

Heard about this at the meeting, I wonder what issues there are not having the bulb at the focal point of the reflector, issues with bulbs in such close proximity, issues with Rich going the expensive route to add actinic lighting ;)

..... issues with bulbs in such close proximity....[/quote]

There shouldn't be any problem with that. I know one guy who has them right next to other for years.

Ok, so toss out the bulb proximity worry, and the 400w "actinic" light snickerdoodle ;)

I'd still be curious about the focal point issue, from what I recall of the meeting (and my background in optics) the way those work to get that nice "uniform" distribution is via the bulb being at the focal point of the mirror assembly. I wonder how 2 bulbs being off axis is going to work. Of course I don't know how the thing is set up either, could essentially be 2 lumenarcs sandwiched together such that the reflector does in fact have two focal points.

But I don't predict Doom and Gloom, Rich has had a fairly good track record of making things work, and doesn't just jump head.. well ok ignore that last part, he might do that for all I know.

do you think together the bulbs act as one big FAT focal point? I think they would be both situated in that flat area at the top, thus even if being one bulb, they'd still throw the light in the same angles when it hits the reflector? (other than the flat part).

one thing that I think you might also be referring to, is what happens in the very middle, the light that's getting thrown away from the sides towards the center... maybe you lose a bit of that.

:D

Dan said that the loss from moving the bulbs a little bit out of true center would be minimal, and I am not at all worried about the heat.

I just set them up and the coverage is damn good. The only reason I am not saying excellent is because the lighting is a little different because now the bulbs go parallel to the tank instead of perpendicular like the used to be and that makes the shadows look different. I don't think its a big deal and I'll should get used to it soon.

I'll tell you this, the color of the tank with all four MH bulbs on is freaking fantastic! I already had VHO actinics Mike!

The 250's are only going to be one an hour or three a day. Whoo hoo!

So did you ditch the VHO actinics in favor of having 4 MH bulbs? Your tank looked pretty bad ass before, I can wait to see what it looked like now.

where's one of those "this thread is useless without pictures" smilies when you need it.

But seriously. this thread is useless without pictures
