Filming speakers ?

Hey guys,

I was reading an article (I think it was FAMA) regarding the Brooklyn Reef Club. They film every speaker they have (with their permission of course) and store it in a library for members to checkout for future reference. Is that something we can do ? I can't make a lot of meetings because I usually work on saturdays (The trials of being a postman). :-(

This post should be in the "Would It Be Great Forum" since it offers no solution. To bad that forum is gone!!!!!! And the "Club Business" forum appears to be locked out?

FWIW many speakers do not like to be filmed. This is a huge reason why BAR hasn't done it in the past.

Filming requires someone to film and it and take charge.

Gresham, it also comes from above the speaker at times as they have commitments to not reproduce it because someone else has it for sale.

For a program so in tune with our mission statement, I hope this coming talk can be recorded and linked to our site with a sticky. Not sure if any decision has been made about filming Rich.

Funny some one explaining this one to me (I know all too well)

Recoding it and putting it on the web ensures the speaker won't be able to give that talk again :(

I am on the fence about video of my talks simply because live and taped are two different animals. If I was putting together a talk that was going to be taped, I would do things differently because things play differently live vs tape and I would be concerned about production values. I would be bummed if a video of me produced without my input showed up on the web, especially if there was no post production. A bad video stays forever. I like the idea of info getting out there, but I also like the idea of engaging people in person because it uses different brain muscles.
So, if there were a TED style production crew and I knew in advance, sure. Otherwise, prolly not. :D

Rich, Nicely put .
Otherwise, if you miss the talk you are missing something special. A one of a kind experience!

???

I just got the blue box... no sub forums showed up. Sure it did for you, but not for me. Do you really think I would have said that if I saw them????

It would be cool to have dvd's of speakers ala imac conferences, reefpalooza, etc. . I understand that would be more labor intensive and the legal aspects of rights, royalties, etc. I like Richard's suggestion of a audio only version. I personally listen to a few podcasts on the hobby (reefcast, talking reef, etc.) and they all helped me grow as a hobbyist. Reef Videos is one of my favorite sites because it's nice to see a plumbing demonstration for a sump, coral frag demo, setting up a calcium reactor and what not. Some of my favorite talks are from Anthony Calfo's "Portrait of a Reef Tank" & "Coral Farming." I can't tell you how many times I've listened to those talks.

These are all suggestions on how we can possibly expand our horizons as a reef club. :p

Will those of you attending listen with plans to post some of the points that stand out to you individually? It would be great to 'hear' the talk second hand. Keep a discussion going in thread after for those of us who cannot make it.

Thanks,

Only one of the above sells DVD's and that's IMACwest. RAP does not sell DVD's and for good reason, the speakers are outside and it's not only hard to see the screen, it's hard to hear them at times.

Audio only still kills the talk from being given again. It appears that fact keeps getting glossed over!

Yeah, if this were back in the day before Power Point it would work out, but the visual aspect of the new presentations have a lot to do with the information exchange.

I will of course ask our speakers if they do/don't mind being taped, as always, but the reality is that the majority of them don't. If someone does say yes I'll post it up and whoever steps up can record it.
