Hamilton 2x250w DE metal halide hood and ballast

I believe it's a 4' Protostar unit. Just tested it today and it fires up fine with no flicker. I know these are probably very out of date, but maybe some of you grow "other" things in your free time . 2x96w power compacts have ballasts too but it never really needed them. Free in Oakland for pickup.

Just curious for us newbies...but how hot do these lights get ???? Is it hot like a big halogen bulb ???

They definitely get hot. You can still touch the enclosure etc. while it's on, but you'd want the bulbs to cool for hours before swapping them out. We ran without a chiller in Oakland for over a decade (most of the hot air got blown out by the fans on the side) and stayed under 80F on the tank. But if you're inland more, they're going to generate quite a bit of heat.

But I figure if someone has solar panels, the wattage cost and heat is moot.
