Hand feedings/Elagance Coral

How do I hand feed my Euphyllia and does my brain coral need to be hand fed???
I saw some pretty elegance coral. I think it was Australian elegance (!I think!). It was closed so it was hard to tell.
I asked the LFS worker and he said elegance coral is hard to keep. Is this true? What info do you guys have on elegance coral?

Your elegance coral question requires an answer that's a borderline dissertation. Google is your friend, you'll find PLENTY of info.

If you are thinking of getting an Elegance think twice, healthy ones grow rapidly, and will sting most corals in its path (it is very potent). You will end up with a giant elegance, and no other corals, unless of course you have some Hydnophora, or Galaxia, then it's full on warfare. If it is not healthy, you know what happens, it dies.

yup i agree, mine was definitely indonesian, and it already died. such a bummer. get the australian if you can. what are the colors? the indo one i got had purple tips. so depressing. we used to have an australian one, and it was the most beautiful coral inthe tank. kept it for two years. cant wait to get another healthy aussie one.which LFS did you see it in?

Elegance used to be easy, but it appears that there is a pathogen in some of the exporters tanks that is being passed to almost all the are imported. They do fine for a while and then essentially rot away. There is a lot of speculation as to the causes and how to get a 'healthy' one, but its really rolling the dice regardless of country of origin.

I got one about 6-8 months ago that is doing fine. The LFS had had it for a while (I think 2 months) so I decided to chance it fully knowing that it was prolly going to not make it. Its doing great, and is the stinging growing monster that Jeremy described. Some of my clowns are hosting in it and I actually never directly feed it. At some point I am going to have to frag it and will be happy to DBTC it.

if it was closed it may not be a good sign. Make sure you see it when its fully expanded..a swollen oral disc and shortened tips are not a good sign. all the above comments on the elegances potent sting are right on. ive had to move a few pieces around it due to mine expanding more and more. ive had a couple indos but couldnt keep them longer than 1 year...the first one i had was doing great...expanded huge, ate well, and had great color. i thought "keeping these isnt that hard" and picked up a nice looking purple and green one with a swollen disk...even though it was on the otherside of the tank, my first one showed the same swollen oral disk within a month. they both lasted about 3 months after that.

i finally bit the bullet and picked up an aussie....5 times more cost wise, but if it survives its well worth it

i hope it survives. i love those corals. i cant wait to get a healthy one again. good luck with yours! thats what mine did, it basically rotted away, and now my tank is having issues, time to do a big water change! :)

sure you can hand feed it along with your brain coral. I feed my brain halfs os silversides, along with my hammer, bubble, and frogspawn.

I've never hand fed Euphyllias, they're sticky enough :D. Plus growth becomes an issue with them, like elegance corals they sting everything in their paths.

Phong, just for you "don't get the elegance coral", see I spit it out ;D

everyone is right about them though. I have had 3 and all have been perfectly fine for a month or two, then poof, they die off. They are the same at the pet store i work at. We just stopped carrying them.

I have 2 of them in different tanks. The AUS one is growing and is very sticky to the touch - had it for a year now ( it cost about twice as much) and then I got one from a LFS (same as Rich above) and its also doing well. The wholesaler had it for 6 months before the store got it. I never feed any of them.

I did too answer your first question!
