Help me silence my drain

How deep does your overflow pipe penetrate the water in your sump?

This is a PG13 forum, Jeremy...hehe

On a serious note.....I think I know why Jeremy asked this question. Typically, if you submerg the overflow pipe far enough into the water, you can quiet it down alot. Else, if you want it to be even more quiet, try T-ing off the output as wide as possible and drill (or notch) the branched part so that the bulk of the waste water will escape it more evenly into the sump area.

Well I was able to get it a lil bit more quieter by using a 1" drain to 1.5 elbow to a 1.5" T durso. The pipe goes down 3". Hopefully when I run some saltwater and add some LR to my sump it will quiet down some more. We'll see how it goes this weekend. :-O

Glad you got it working.

Playing around with my set up this morning, I've found that the overflow setup has a bigger effect on noise and microbubbles than the drain.

The drain design helps, but fiddling with the overflow (adding a hose to let air escape, adding an elbow to the overflow like the BeanAnimal design) has a big effect on how turbulent the water is coming down the hose to the sump.

Hey John,

TubeRider silenced my overflows on my 100g for $75 bucks and it works like a charm. I'd give him a call. He didn't use socks or media. He tweaked the plumbing and going forward, I don't have to do anything but enjoy the silence.
