Hi there! I'm a student in the local area working on researching invertebrates of the Northern Californian coast, specifically the species of nudibranch Melibe leonine. I’m looking to research the effect of marine heatwaves on their development, to get a better picture of what climate change may hold for the species overall. Because these animals live in Californian water, my set up will require a chiller to achieve the proper water temperature. I though this was a good place for documenting tank keeping info and talking with people also interested in aquaculture. I'm also looking for a secondhand chiller for my tank :3 I'd appreciate any interest/interaction in regards to people interested inverts and anyone who knows anyone with any info on a secondhand chiller! Thank you and have a wonderful day :]

Those are pretty darn cool to see in the wild.

What are you going to feed them? Aquarium products, raise your own, or wild collect?

Since I'll be raising them from egg clutches ideally, it'll start with just some algal cultures, but eventually the adults eat stuff like brine shrimp and other smaller critters since they're filter feeders. One of the reasons I picked them, a lot of nudis eat corals and sponges that just aren't feasible or sustainable to dive for consistently.

Welcome. What kind of chiller are we taking about?
I've looked into a couple different jbj chillers based on theoretical tank size. I'd be doing an AIO set up, either a 40 gal or 20 gal. The temp of the water would have to be around 19 C, so the two sizes I've looked at for chillers were the jbj 1/4 for a 40 gal, or the jbj 1/5 for a 20 gal. Both of those have the BTU to get the respective tank size down to temp. I've looked into other chiller brands but haven't had too much luck in terms of even getting a reading on BTU or strength.

Welcome! Thanks for supporting the club. Be sure to check the buy sell trade forum as well as looking into the offers from other members.

A lot of reefers don't need chillers in the post metal halide world so I'm betting this should be easy to find locally from longer tenured folks.

Also maybe we'll convince you to keep a reef tank at some point too! Feel free to stop by our frag swap on 6/1 also to meet other members in person.

Thanks so much! good to know as well that there's potentially some chillers laying around :3 i appreciate the welcome I've gotten from everyone :D

Welcome! Very cool project! If you dive and want a partner to look for some in the rocky reefs of Monterrey just let me know. My oldest son is really into underwater macro photography. He loves finding nudis, some of his absolute favorites.

Wow these are amazing

these are some gorgeous photos ! unfortunately I never ended up getting certified, went through the process a few years ago but was dealing with some nasty chronic pain/physical disability stuff at that time. I'm hoping to get back into diving now that I'm further along in my treatment though, and will definitely keep and eye out for your son's work!

Any Water Dive Center in San Jose and Aquarius in Monterrey are both excellent local dive shops. I sometimes help out on the dive classes.

Welcome to BAR! Sounds like a fun and rewarding research project. Best of luck to you and I'm stoked to see someone in the club might have the gear you need to get started. Be sure to start a tank journal and let us follow along your research journey.
