How do you clean your filter socks???

So I have always just rinced my filter socks out thouroughly in hot water and then let them soak in a bowel of water and vinegar; then rinse them out again before drying and of course using.

So I have been wondering if anyone else has any other methods of keeping their filter socks super clean.

Lets hear it...

I gather up about four to six filter socks throw in washing machine. Small to medium load cycle add approximately half cup of bleach and wash. Have the load go through the rinse cycle twice. Pull out and let air dry for a minimum of 24 hours before use.

I do a whole load at a time the same way as Bryan (that is when I remeber to get Oxi-Clean, too bad those commercial aren't on anymore, they're a good reminder). With two rinse cycles like Eileen, then into the dryer.

I do the same, but I soak it in a water/bleach solution.

+1. As easy as putting in the washer for ~30 minutes, take them out and they're ready to go.

I've been read the riot act before when I've washed up "fish towels" (i.e. big spill on floor, used to soak up water) with regular towels, she says the grit transfers.. of course she also yells at me for using "good towels".. I mean christ the washing machine erases everything! Its not like I got super glue on them... ok so I did a couple towels but still!

Great responses... thanks. So, I've heard of using oxiclean and bleach before but I've always resisted that because of the harshness of those items. Is the consensus that if you rinse really well and dry for, lets say 24 hours, that everything is A okay?

If you have grit that transfers you need a new washing machine.

Yep. the 24 hour waiting period is to ensure that any residual bleach dissipates.

Costco sells a huge box of oxiclean pretty cheap. Also a very good source to get vinegar.

Costco for all of your reefing needs......

Puson Plaza is the best for Vinegar....The Kimchee vinegar is the best (30%) :p

I too found that the bleach/washing machine method works very well. I was concerned the first time that I did it, because I could still smell bleach on them even after 2 rinses, so on the second rinse I added a dechlorinator as a precaution. No more bleach smell on them when they are done. 8)

Thanks for all the feedback. A thourough rinsing and washing with vinegar has always done the trick for me but I used them a lot for the first time while taking down and setting back up my new tank. They are especially dirty and seems no matter how much I rinse them they don't look clean. Bleach and Oxi in the washing machine it is.
