Our mission

I haven't done a water change in a month... My tank is loving it!

My corals and tank have never looked better!

In my 28 gallon tank, due partly to laziness, lots of work, and not being home much I haven't changed the water for at least a month and probably longer. I usually changed once a week, sometimes every two weeks.

I've been testing calc, alk, and nitrates a couple times a week trying to nail my 2 part dosing down to which I am getting really close. Nitrates still aren't detected with my test kit, I guess the bio-load is really low seeing that I only have a clownfish and 6-line in there. My lime in the sky acro, shades of fall mille, and monti's are looking the best they have ever looked. Actually all of the corals in the tank are looking great. Nothing else has changed, feeding 3 times a week, dosing amino acids 3 times a week, nothing else different.

So questions...

1. I was always taught/told/read on forums that in nano tanks water changes are the key to success. Did I understand wrong or is this a fluke, or whatever works works Jay.

2. I think on bigger tanks water changes are done what... Every month or so? Maybe that explains why growth has been so slow in my tanks when I was water changing every week? And why I look at other peoples big tanks and their growth is at light speed compared to my tanks.

3. I started thinking about that gentleman who presented at BAYMAC, with his tanks that he never did a water change in. I remember him saying that when you do a water change you shock your tank, especially in a small nano tank. I was skeptical at first, but now I'm rethinking that.

Thoughts, beliefs, facts, random scribbles?

Well water changes CAN be very useful, however if you're not with the parameters spot on, doing lots of water changes might cause more stress due to fluctuations.

Dilution is the Solution to reduce the Pollution I believe is how the saying goes. Well if your tank is clean as it stands, low fish load, kick ass skimmer, etc, then you won't need to change as much.

I think with nano-tanks because they're "all in one" solutions, the extent of filtration used to be bioballs in a chamber and a sponge filter, which can get quite dirty and be detrimental to your tanks "cleanliness". If you yank those, toss in a skimmer, etc, you're basically not any different than a large tank.

Hrm, maybe I'm not doing water changes correctly... Bring the water up to temp, add salt mix for at least a day usually longer, check salinity, add as needed if the tank is running on the low side (which is usually does, tank would be at 1.025, water change water would be 1.026), add magnesium as needed, etc...

The only filtration in this tank is a wad of filter floss that is changed regularly. All those other "nitrate traps" have been removed.

I wonder if the "there's no replacement for displacement" motto applies to reef tanks.

Yeah if the bio-load is low, you can do WC like once a month. I haven't done any WC for almost 5 weeks now :( . It's weird that I'm so freaking busy after I got laid off  ..

I must say that it's better to be safe than sorry. When thing goes out of wack, it's a PIA to get it back the way it is. I want to do WC at least once a month. If I have time, I do it every two weeks.
