Ideas on catching a dotty back

I've read some ideas on how to make a fish trap:
a) Fish came in ate the food then left

I've read ideas on how to sprinkle food with the net in the water and wait for it to come up to eat:
a) Bait either floats away to a suboptimal part of the tank
b) Fish out waits me.
c) I start cursing at the tank and my roommates then yell at me to shut up.

Any other ideas or perhaps refinements to my technique?

Make the trap small enough so that the dotty can get in, but not larger fish - a 2 liter bottle works well for this - the dotty's are inquisitive (in my experience), so drop some mysis in there and let it sit in the tank. Patience is key - you may want to wait a few days after beginning your baiting of the trap before you try to catch it, since the fish will get used to going into the bottle for food (this is a good thing)...

I agree, I did the 2liter thing to catch my fish with some live brine in it, but I didn't feed the tank for like 2 days so the fish were hungry. While I was there I tied a string to the bottle so if I happen to see the fish go in I can just jank the string to pull up the bottle. It took about 30 minutes for the fish to figure how to get in the bottle.

Try this. It worked for me thanks to AJ.
