We're looking to buy 1 or 2 laptops and we're looking for advice. We have a Sony that we've had a lot of screen problems with. We don't need anything fancy, just dependable. We hope to buy at Staples, to take advantage of their 2 year return policy. If you pay about $150 or so extra, you can get all of your purchase amount towards a new one within two years. If we go that route we would be limited to HP Dell and Acer. But we welcome all feedback.

Buy from Dell with the 3 years warranty. Any wrong with the laptop, they come to your house and fix it. Their customer service is not great like they used to but still better than a lot of other brands.

You can get some fairly cheap dell laptops that are "good enough" for most everyday activities/tasks. Depends what type of power user you are though. I have the Acer Aspire (an older one) and I like that, cost me about $1000 though a few years ago, and today I could get something way more powerful for two-thirds the cost! :D But it's lasted fairly well, and I treat it fairly harshly, sure I put it in my bag that has a laptop holding area, but I do toss my bag down quite hard sometimes. Only real issues I've had with it is the hard-drive go kaput, the first time they fixed it it free, 2nd time I simply bought a different brand of hard drive and it's worked flawlessly since.

Don't know anything about that $150 to upgrade deal staples has, but if prices aren't inflated too much might be worth it, because laptops (computers in general) depreciate like crazy, so in 2 years you could get something way more powerful for less money, so might be worth looking into.

Laptop report. Theresa wanted to go shopping for her laptop on
sunday. Went to Staples. Had been looking at a Dell they were closing out. The price last time I saw it was $629. They were out so we spoke to the store computer guy. He had just called the Santa Clara store which had 4, reduced to $499! Bought the warranty/return policy for $150, so ithin two years we can return it and get the full purchase price towards a new one. Hard to beat.

Nothing fancy, but here are the stats: AMD 64 X2 TL-58 1.9 GHz, 2gb,160 gb hard drive, 8x dvd +/_, supposed to have slightly better graphics card than normal.

Oh ok thanks.. My uncle is looking for a laptop too but he doesn't want to spend more than $600. I don't like AMD chip too much. It's hard to find an Intel chip system for under $600 ;D ..

what's wrong with the AMD chips? I'm just curious, i've had a lot of success with our large servers with the 64-bit amd's.

I'm getting a macbook pro in a few days =X I guess it's good they use the Pynryn intel chips now.

Have fun in the Apple store, your going to need to remember where it's at

We strictly use Dells at Reef for our laptops. Randy's screen died on his on a road trip and they came out to his hotel and put a new one in :) He was only down for a partial day!

the apple stores are a madhouse sometimes, lol. I'm ordering it through a buddy of mine who works at Apple to bypass the rush =)

Go to fatwallet.com and find a dell coupon, and buy Dell.
I did get a 17in dual core dell for my friend. Regular price was 1500 and final price was 1000. They also send him 150 gift card.

 and will your buddy bypass the Apple Store when you have problems?

Yup, I don't ever need to go into the apple store if I don't want to. My friend is a pretty high up developer for Apple, which is really cool. I have a few other friends in Apple too, so I'm going for it ;)
