Loud Overflow Box

My over flow box is pretty loud. Trying to think of wasy to make it quiter. It is a single drain over flow with 1" tubing for the drain. I can move the pvc pipe with filter pad around in the outer box and change the type of noise but never can go away.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys but running a larger return pump may help too. The (in my head at least :) ) is that if your overflow is a little more challenged by the return pump less air will get in. .... it sounds good at least, anyone else agree?

That sounds like playing with fire to me. There's a fine line between 'a little more challenged' and 'a little too challenged.' The latter could mean a lot of water on the floor.

I totally agree, you have to do your math first. If you already did your homework and the math looks good then ignore me (most do anyway :) )

+1 for durso. If you don't have enough room you can add a valve to the drain line and close it until it slows down a bit but this can also cause floods if for some reason the drain gets clogged.

Would a Durso mess up with the skimming action since you are now no longer taking surface water into the sump (or is there enough turbulence from spilling over into the overflow keep the surface mixed)

The durso goes into the second chamber so the overflow still is skimming surface water from the tank. The function of the pipe is to raise the water level in the second chamber so that there is no splashing and also the gurgling sound ceases because there is no cascading effect. So no it should still skim.

I would not see why the durso would cause a skimming problem, it appears to me that all it is doing is incresing the water volume in the outer overflow box.
I also that about putting a ball valve in the drain line to slow the drain down a bit but not sure if that would solve the problem, and I think the risk for a flood is a lot higher

You can also check out the Stockman Standpipe and the Hofer GurgleBuster for alternatives. They're based on the same idea as the durso but are a little more compact in design. I use a Stockman because my overflow box was a little too small when I tried to build a Durso.

I recently built a GurgleBuster but I haven't tested it out because I can't get my Stockman out of there. I think it's calcified and fused to the bulkhead or something. Scary. But not as scary as putting a ball valve on the drain. That seems like a highly questionable idea.

I just installed the Gurgle Buster in my over flow. It works great. The noise is gone and I am quite happy thanks guys. I would recomend this to anyone that has a loud overflow. It was really easy to make and I was able to fit it into my very small over flow box
