got ethical husbandry?

Love my new skimmer! Ian, is this what you were telling me about?

Ian, I remember you were telling me about this new Vertex skimmer that kicks behind during the BBQ. Is this the one?

Anyway, after hooking up my new 70G tank to the original tank, my Euroreef skimmer with Eheim pump has been suffering from under skimming, and I had hard time keeping the water clean. Instead of wasting hours of time worrying about algae and loosing $$$ of SPS, I decide to go for a new skimmer. I got my eyes set on a Alpha 250, but its dimension is 0.03" wider than my 30G sump :(. So I settled with Alpha 200, with some worry about if it is big enough (for those people who have not seen my tank, I always pack my tanks with corals, fish, and frags). Boy, am I impressed with the new skimmer. I think it will be good enough for my setup.

It only use 38w of power, is dead silent (relatively, it makes my Eheims sounding like trains). The only downside is it is not cheap. But compare to a Bubble King, it is still cheap, and it is made by the same manufacture with a cone shape (the red dragon pump even says Bubble king on it :)). Thumbs up for the people looking for a good performing skimmer that is not too big and deadly quiet.

Yep, it is made by Royal Exclusiv (same company that makes Bubble King). Oh, I was wrong on the power consumption in my original post. It only takes 28w, not 38w I originally wrote.

Nice looking skimmer, yeah I remember Ian telling me about it too (does he get a commission of each one sold :D). Looks like a good skimmer, a bit higher priced than say the ATi Bubble Master line, but not as high priced as other cone skimmers.

But without Ian, how do we ever get out of the recession? Seriously, I think I should thank Ian for stiring up my interest in a new skimmer, even though my wallet hates him :D. I have the thing fully open (lowest water level) with the bigger conduit (more air) on the pump, and it overflowed on me for the first two days, and I still have to empty wet skim almost everyday for the last two days (I only have the skimmer running for 4 days). I know my water was dirty, but I did not know it was this dirty. This skimmer is actually a little smaller than my old Euroreef. I still don't get it, the physics of skimming is very simple, and all skimmers seem to be built in simple ways, and yet they can skim with much difference.

Phong, I got it from Aquacave. Everyone is running a $150 off $900 original price promotion now, and I found a 5% off coupon for Aquacave online. I think the code is RC5 if I remember it right.

Btw, I was at Blue Ocean Aquatics yesterday, and Tec has a ton of ATB skimmers. He is a good friend of Victor (the person who makes ATB according to Tec), and he might be able to hook you up with a good price if you are interested in ATB skimmer. I did not ask about price since I am in love with my Alpha :).
