Need to step up my game

I've been really lagging on my tank recently. A parasite from a pair of new Ventralis wiped out all my fish within 3 days. They were being eaten alive by something. I really should have QT'd those last two.

I still have all my gobies, but Anthias went out quick. They were doing so well too. I'll be QT'ing my fish in my 55g brute for 2 weeks now before adding them to my display. No more screwups =(

I also need a new way to change water. My current system is incredibly laborious. I have to fill up a 55g brute with about 40g of water, mix salt, and put them in small 5 gallon jugs, then lug them up to the top floor, remove water with a brita filter water holder, and then fill it back up.

it sucks bad. then I have to change the water on my frag tank.

I'll come up with something...

at least my phosphates are coming under control in the ELOS since I'm not feeding like 10 times a day anymore

Do you really want to QT in a can - you won't be able to see the fish well for parasites as you would in a small tank. How about getting a cheak 10 gallon glass tank for QT.

ah very true, might have to wait for the petco dollar per gallon sale...

10g may be too small to QT fish for 2 weeks no? Especially something like anthias?

I'm thinking at least 40g.

you can pick up a 20 long for $20-30 and that is easily big enough of a QT tank. Scour craigslist and I bet you'll find dirt cheap tanks in the 10-30g range. Some might even be free. Acrylic is even better so you can safely put it on the garage floor etc (no stand needed) and not worry about it being really level.

Gomer, good call on the acrylic. It'll be on the concrete basement floor, though I was going to lay down some scrap wood anyway

I'm not sure where you get it's OK to use unleveled acrylic tanks but I know of no manufacturers that thinks its OK.

a small acrylic tank can handle the stress of being unleve more than glass can. Just the elasticity of the structural material.

FWIW they can, but they are not designed to do as such. I've had this very conversation with three of the leading manufacturers and all stated it can handle the load, but it greatly lowers the critical breaking point if anything else did occur (earthquake, knocked against, etc)
Yep, and if you've ever seen an acrylic tank go they don't mess around. I've seen seams that slowly open up over time due to stress.

I've seen complete blow outs as well. I lost an entire back of a 55g tank once while @ Cortez.

so with acrylic is the failure usually with the seam? As with glass it can be the seam or cracking of the pane?
Correct

I watched a 280 go at about 2/3 full, "clunk". I was just there to witness the filling as I would be servicing the tank, but not doing the setup. Of course I was the only guy with the shop vac, took about 5 hours to dry the place out, and the floors still needed to be refinished.

may I suggest an old pump and a couple of reels of 5/8" vinyl tubing? let the pump do the work, not your legs and arms...

I just got my new TDS meter and RO/DI unit today. 200 in and 0 out.

I have a 100gal glass tank, and last september I was able to witness the entire fron tconer crack, top to bottom. It shot out a nice stream of water. Luckly it happened when it did. 15min later and we would have been gone. We were getting ready to go to Vegas for the weekend.
