You have a refractometer that’s good enough. Just calibrate it and call it a day. Don’t fall into the newbie trap of buying hella stuff. There’s plenty of time for that. In this hobby, Slow is Fast and fast is slow.
yea your right its very addicting.

An empty tank is one of the most dangerous things in this hobby! Cause once you're full...you'll want another tank. :)
hahaha that's me currently. Although I'm not sure if its a good idea for me to start another tank right now, I was looking into the reef casa tank and start a little coral farm.

Ok that's good, honestly you don't need to go higher than 8. How is your salinity and what method are you using to check it?

The fact the snails died so fast is a little concerning so we'll try to troubleshoot here.
Second that. I run my tank at 8. The key is stability - versus chasing some magic number
