After over a year out of reef hobby, I decided to come back. After debating with wife about the tank size, we stick with 48” long. I pickup a new CDA 140g tank (48x24x28” high) yesterday along with a used Trigger 44 sump.

This time, I will use the Aluminum extrusion for stand. I picked up and oversized stand and planning to cut it down to match with the tank. At the moment the stand is 54”x28.5x36”high.

I marked it with some painter tape and will need to cut some of them to make it to the right size to fit the tank. Any suggestions to cut extrusion?

Miter saw with the right blade would do the trick. I have a bandsaw that would work also. It's aluminum so almost anything will cut it.

I will try that. Still need a couple 1.5”x3” (32”long) for center support the stand because the tank is heavy.

Looks like the extrusions currently use anchor fasteners. Depending on where you cut, you might need to mill in new holes for the anchor connectors or use something else like corner brackets. Like Eric said, most blades will cut aluminum but speciality ones will cut cleaner. More importantly make sure the saw cuts straight.

Yes, anchor fasteners. I will try to drill the holes to reuse the anchor fasteners.

Welcome back! Nice to see you got the tank back safely. That stand is already very nice. Have you thought about just placing the tank center and leave 3” on the sides and 4” extra space in the rear? Also make sure the overflow plumbing clears the bars underneath.

@SupraSaltyReefer I did but I am not sure it will support twice the weight vs the original setup. If I do that only one side will sit on the main front horizontal/ vertical bars and all other will sit on support cross bars.

Ahhh good point. Contact a machine shop in SJ that works with extruded aluminum. They’ll be able to cut your bars and drill the holes you need easily.

Any suggestions on how to plump the return line from 1inch bulkhead to 2ea of 3/4inch lock line? The tank came with 1 bulkheads attached on each side of the glass overflow.

Get a 1" x 3/4" reducer bushing then use 3/4" locline parts.

I believe he's looking to change covert the fpt threading on the flange side for the returns inside the tank, not outside.

The tank has drill hole for 1” return, so it must use 1” bulkhead. There are existing 3/4” bulkhead that already installed with the tank. One one each side of the overflow box.

I have the Vectra L2 pump that I will use for return pump. So I will use 1” pipe from the L2 pump to the bulkhead.

My question is, from the bulkhead in the overflow box, to get the best flow rate, what best way to do?

1/ place the reducer at the bulkhead to reduce pipe in the overflow to 3/4” then use T adapter to connect to the existing 3/4” bulkhead before use lockline to get water back to the tank.

2/ Or just use 1” pipe from the overflow box then reduce it to 3/4” at the T connector then connect to the existing 3/4” bulkhead before use lockline to get water back to the tank.

I'm not clear what you're asking actually now. Is there a single 1" bulkhead in the overflow box for the return that comes from the sump and there are two 3/4" bulkheads in the overflow box for output to the tank?
