Pretty neat product -powdered water

I got that email to, seems like a good joke lmao. I'm not falling for it today.

@BAYMAC almost as good as your INSTAFLOW

Got the email and thought it would be funny to my little marine science class. Not a soul got the joke. So we did a little claim-evidence-reasoning exercise. A few kids got the joke, as I could see on their faces. Others - nope. Two camps argued that "hydro" means water so it must be better than water (?) vs it contains hydrogen, which is "more powerful than water." Oy.

But…
On a side note…
I’m no chemistry major…
I’m not a scientist of any kind and god makes my saltwater
But I do know there are “anhydrous salts” that do pull water from the air…
My terms may be wrong but I have witnessed a powder turn to liquid

So, might it actually be possible to create a similar type that would yield a usable saltwater?
Would be kinda cool to pour a bag of powder into a tank at night and see water in the morning
Or is it a physical impossibility?

It's a semester-long elective class for 7th-8th graders. I made it up and lobbied my district hard for it. Kids have no idea it is an entire second science class with no homework or tests but just tons of sciencey activities, heh heh. Super fun, depending on the class composition. We are in the third year of a new schedule I dislike, and new admin made so many changes it is sad. Used to be of interest to all levels of students, most challenged special ed students on campus were placed in it, and at least one section of it was same time as English learners class, so if they graduated out of it they could come into "aquatic studies" - perfect bc science offers solid skills and interest for everyone plus tons of natural conversation and vocab. Now it's only one section and same time as adv band, second yr French, adv Spanish for native speakers, and Leadership, so all those kids can't take it, and not at same time as English learning so those kids are also out. Long answer, but developing this class over ten years gave me a revitalizing boost even though it's a lot of extra work.
And YES - you stated another argument that came up today! One group claimed water was more powerful bc it would make powder disappear by dissolving it, while others claimed the powder would dissolve and "fully infect" the water so powder is more powerful. After teaching a long time, I still constantly hear new things.

Not any salt I know off the top of my head. Of all the liquefacient salts I know, some could be tank water additives but can't replace NaCl. Let's see what the chemists in the group have to say...

Think your thinking deliquescent materials or substances which are a class of hygroscopic substances love that word! Several different salts fall into that class. Had a side gig working on a ranch that raised cattle in Florida. Normally we used regular old white salt licks for the cattle but when the humidity got crazy high they would just get soft then liquify..Cows, horses and deer would double down like eating snow cones!! So we switched to brown salt blocks which had trace minerals like cobalt, iodine, iron, zinc, copper, manganese and probably a few more oh calcium and selenium rings a bell. Hmm mineral tablets designed for saltwater tanks you just toss in regularly that devolves like tums. Be easier then mixing reef powder trace minerals !! .Minerals made the blocks harder so they lasted longer in higher humidity.. There are several colored salt licks on the market designed with different minerals the cows need to substitute on what the open range or pastures are lacking they probably make custom blocks depending on soil/ grass testing by now! . Not sure how many colors licks are out there now but garrentee they will be high in tds. If a cow licks non organic salt blocks for minerals but food is all organic wonder if still considered organic? lol guess depends on how many licks! Alright to much rambling hungry now thinking about steaks!

Sodium polyacrylate is the grainy powder used in diapers and it is ( Anhydrous ) which can absorb hundreds of times it’s own weight in liquid gelling up. Adding salt liquifies the gelling.. Some cool classroom experiments can be done using sodium polyacrylate..
Why do I know whats in diapers? Back in the mid late 90’s I worked as a private investigator which entailed surveillances all over the country for numerous reasons. One aspect of collecting evidence was to take trash after it was placed on the curbs hence making it public property up for grabs. You would be amazed what documents, financials, bills, phone records , unmentionables etc folks toss out! Well some evil evil company made this device called The Diaper Genie which twisted each diaper super tightly stringing them all together resembling large sausage links! After an unknown amount of time or the slightest bump touch one would explode triggering a chain reaction down the line!! Needless to say I investigated how diapers were made and what I was being exposed to besides the expected in hopes of mitigating ..The problem compounded due to the sodium polyacrylate (SAP) turning the sausages into a Napalm gell when they exploded!! Precautions (ppe) were taken but the Diaper Genie took casualties! Im far from a chemist just learning as life follows many adventures! Sorry for derailing heres a pic to stay on track
