I have used both as well.
Purigen has very consistent grain size and can be regenerated.
But regenerating is a hassle, and not always clear when or how many times you can do it.
Carbon varies a LOT by brand, so you really need to be more specific.
My preference is BRS ROX 0.8
Small consistent grains, and almost no dust. Expensive, but you use a bit less.
Then there is the whole discussion on reactors, bags, and so on.
Opinion:
I think the only thing that really matters is when you forget to change it.
The chemical differences are in the noise compared to that.
