Our mission

Reduce noise

Hello everyone ... I'm still getting my tank fully situated. One of the issues I have remaining is the noise from the pumps. The humming noise generated by these pumps is just annoying.

Any recommendations for submersible pumps that are silent?

Is the pump sitting on sump bottom? You could try putting a pad under it to reduce some noise there. Also how is the return pipe connected? Solid PVC to the tank? Replacing with a very flexible piece somewhere goes a long way to stiffle that low frequency hum that is quite annoying (as it goes through walls quite easily).

A test of how noisy the pump actually is you could disconnect it from the plumbing and simply hold it in a bucket, not touching anything, make sure it's not making much splashing... just to hear what the pump itself is doing.

One thing I used to do before I moved my sump to the garage is glue flexible airline to the bottom of the pumps in the sump. It provides a shock absorbor and dampens the sound without being a big nitrate sink.

Even with the Eheims, you should still consider sfsuphysics' advice -

Put a mat under it so the pump doesn't rest directly on the bottom of the sump.
Use some flexible tubing to isolate the pump from the rest of the set up.

These are also cheap things you can do to your existing set up without going out and dropping the money on an Eheim and finding out that they are not a panacea for noise in your situation.
