Replacing Macro Algae with Corals in the Sump?

Yes, it is tempting :).

Fun fact: the German word for sump is, translated, equipment storage tank. Folks there generally do not use this for other things like we like to do here.
Interesting, thanks for sharing

I love tanks where the sump is filled with equipment, it’s always cool to see. Especially when its tidy

My first chamber is the refugium and probably the most practical place for corals. Can the drains (primary, emergency) be modified for directional flow instead of straight down?

I wouldn't put something on the emergency, but putting a 45° or a 90° on the main doesn't seem completely crazy. However, sumps are so small that I would instead just buy a super cheap directional powerhead if you really needed additional flow. Those can be found for probably <= $20 used (or online).

I've never used additional flow when putting corals in the sump though. You're probably not going to be doing prolonged SPS that way, and anything else I'd expect the normal flow through a sump to be good enough.
