Cali Kid Corals

Salinity Variation

thanks erin, sounds about right. my tank salinity is usually 1.025ppt, but i had to top off with ro/di after i packed the corals for the swap and trades. i gave away an urchin which used up a bit of water too and the snails were the last to be packed. fwiw, i use the bar salinity calibration fluid for my refractometer.

I used the one I bought from eBay and the one from Aquatic Collection.
Maybe they are just not precisely done and I have been using an uncalibrated refractometer all this time.
Can I bring my refractometer to next meeting so you guys can take a look at it?
Thanks

Okay, gotcha. There could be a ton of reasons why the 2 aren't matching--technique like Tony says, or one of them didn't have a cap on tight enough, or you spilled a drop of freshwater into one of them, etc. etc. I'd just grab 2 fresh standards and try again.

I pulled out 2 random bottles of salinity and 2 bottles of KH stds from the stock today and all of them tested out right on the money.

Tested both standards and got similar results.

Hey guys,

I went and gave the calibration a shot again.
Tested the solutions I had and I got them all to match today.
IDK what I did wrong last time.... Maybe I didn't rinse it throughly the refractometer before using the fluid and got wrong stuff.
I appreciate everyone that took the effort and went on testing your standard.
I'm sorry I ever doubted the standard.

Sincerey

Any standard easily can be off.

If you find one that has a loose cap, or if there are signs of salt creep, alk residue, or whatever on the bottle, you can't rely on it to be accurate.
