Pictures from mother colony; bottom two open zoas are the salted agaves, others are Vamps in Drag (available in another DBTC of mine). Pictures taken under T8 actinic lighting.

beats me, but 90% of my zoas have melted away in the last few months while all my paly's are going strong

Ahhh, okay. I've only heard of 'salted agave zoas', not palys, and wasn't aware if there was a clear distinction between the two. They're big enough to be palys, but I believe they're zoas.
 
As I recall the easiest way to tell the difference is that palys will often incorporate tiny rough granules like sand or debris into the surface of their stalk while zoas are completely smooth.

Most people just say zoas for small polyps and palys for big ones.

My advice is to invest in a journal. Almost all the dbtc chain owners require a journal to make sure they can verify your system suitability.
At the moment I as an example, cannot consider you for any of my DBTC because I do not know who you are(system wise I mean)
