Science Teacher and Relatively New Reefer

Hi All!

My name is Jordan and I am a high school marine biology and zoology teacher in SFUSD. I am relatively new to reef keeping but I have been keeping freshwater tanks all of my life. I currently have a 29-gallon reef tank with a few palys and a Kenyan tree coral with two clown fish that I have had for about a year. My students want to start a 60-gallon reef and tropical saltwater tank so I am seeking advice and perhaps donations (and I will write you a letter so you can deduct it from your taxes)! I already started cycling it with aragonite sand on the bottom. Please feel free to reach out if you have any advice or would like to donate anything to our program!

Thanks,
Jordan

The best advice I can give you is become a member. This club will help you beyond what you can imagine.

I'll pay for a year membership for you. Just gotta figure out how to do it.

Hey there! Welcome to BAR and glad you decided to reach out. I'm sure between the many members, there's plenty of gear and livestock that can be shared. Sounds like you have the tank already and started cycling it with sand? What else do you have already?

I have a nice HOB filter I could donate. It was provided by another member and I have not used it.

Share some pics of your setup when you get a chance. Starting a tank journal would be a great way to document it as well. We are currently running a Budget Tank Exhibition too, which could be another fun way to document the progress and generosity of this club.

Awesome! Here is a picture of the tank. It has 2 HOB filters currently. Great idea about the journal!

HOB filters are not likely to cut it for a fish only or a reef aquarium. It may be best to drain the tank get an overflow box and plumb in a sump, look into live rock, and a protein skimmer as well. What type of lighting do you have on the tank? Also make sure the tank is cycled before adding any fish.

I have some dry rock I would be willing to donate, but you would want to cure it for a few weeks.

Once your established and actually ready for corals. I have a few types of leather corals, maybe some other soft corals I would be willing to donate to the cause.

+ 1 to figuring out a protein skimmer, even the hob one would be a great step up above only hob filters specifically for salt water tanks.

My first fish only reef tank with nems, I ran hob filters and a hob skimmer for a few years with no real issues. If you could get a sump It's definitely the way to go. If that's unreasonble hob skimmer in addtion to your hob filters.

Once you become a supporting member also consider coming to our up coming frag swap on February 23rd in brisbane. That would give you a opportunity to meet a good portion of the clubs active memebers.

Welcome to the hobby and good luck!!!

Welcome to the support group! It's great that you are setting up a tank in your classroom. I have corals that I would be happy to donate for your tank. Definitely become a supporting member and attend some of our events like CFM and Frag swaps.
Best of Luck!
To be clear (CFM) coral farmers market isn’t our event. It's a third party that runs and Organizes it. We are allowed to set up a table there to tell people about the club, answer questions, and socialize. We are able to provide tickets at a discount to our supporting members. We have no direct involvment in what occurs with cfm. Just mentioning this for sake of clairty. The February frag swap will be a club lead event.

Oh! I should have one that was donated to me from another member that I haven't setup either. Mainly because I'm upgrading the tank and wouldn't be using it anyway. I'm too far from you, but possibly getting it into the hands of someone that is in your area that is heading to the CFM would be willing to transport?

I have a true mixed reef with a HOB. Can it work? Yes, but I agree that it’s harder and I wish I’d gone for a sump.

What I’d do is buy and drill a second tank, do a tank transfer (right now it’s just sand so it’ll be super easy), and you can turn the original tank and HOB into an enclosure for other animals.

Petco was doing 50% off, not sure if it’s still on
