SG and Evaporation Question

Now that there’s a handle on evaporation, about a quart a day (Is this normal for a 75gal?) I want to stabilize my SG at an appropriate level. In the books it says anything between 22 and 26. If I’m looking to do sps what should I be aiming for?

1 quart a day is extremely good (IMO), often with a tank your size I wouldn't be surprised to see on the order of 1 gallon per day (think about emptying that much liquid right on your floor too ).

As to the specific gravity, it honestly depends upon what you want to keep if it's a fish only system keeping your salinity down in the 1.020 (26ppt) range isn't unheard of. If you want a full blown coral reef however closer to to 1.026 (35ppt). 22ppt (1.017) is more for trying to do a quarantine/pest killer tank I believe as that is a tad on the low side.

As to how much you need to worry about that evaporation, as long as you keep with your top up not too much to worry about.

your 75 gallon tank (lets say 80% of that is actually water, the rest rock, so 60 gallons of water). 60gallons @ 1.026 then 1 day later 59.75 would be on the order of 1.0264 which IMO isn't that much to worry about

At the moment mine is covered with glass. As soon as the new LEDs arrive it will be an open top and I'm sure the rate will go up.

Do you still run the stock pump? They tend to put out a lot of heat.

I evap about 1-1.5 on my 120+ also just keep up on your top off thenyoull be good to go.

i replaced the stock pump with mj1200. Yeah, that sure cools down the tank a whole whole lot. Though, I have 150w MH sits 4 inches above the water. I run my tank at 78F. Maybe that's too high?

When i have the glass cover on, it's only evaporate ~.5-1 gallon a week in total.

78 is ok. You could run it at 76 if you like.
