go.finiship.com has pretty good rates. Usually can ship to east coast for under $55 overnight for a 8x8x7 under 4lbs box. Overnight in Cali is usually $30-35. I believe the owner use to be a reefer too if I recall correctly.

In the old days we used to pack torches upside down with the base branch in styrofoam floating so that the soft tissue is always suspended.

One method that's used now to protect the soft tissue is a hole in the middle of a small deli container, stick the plug through then rubber band around the plug under the container so it doesn't come out.
