Any thermostat can fail, smart or not, and both kinds tend to fail 'off' if/when there's a problem.
I have a nest - agree that its "smart" adjustments aren't worth fighting with, but since I let the house get a little cool overnight, it's nice to be able to crank up the heat without getting out of bed when I wake up earlier than usual.
