High Tide Aquatics

So I had a coral dream of all things...

Well, it started out with me breaking some lab equipment, but some how ended up with me rapidly propagating the most bizarre coral. It was like a hybrid between an acan and neon toadstool. Think acan, but replace the feeding tenticles with neon toadstool polyps.

..I think I need to stop looking at corals for a while :p

You gotta check out this one... green tentacles. Hard to see in the pic :D

I have trouble sleeping because of Coral sometimes... It's like worrying about work: Is my Alk to high, maybe I should move the coral down, maybe the flow won't be enough down there, maybe my alks ok and my test kit sucks.. or is my salt mix wrong. Arrggggggggggghhhhh. Why is the tank so quiet ?

do people test that much? i've only tested a few times since i started this hobby. i gauge it by how the corals look and whether they are growing much.

I was doing fine before I started testing so much.. then a couple of things went pear-shaped and Im probably overtesting.

Sam, those pillow look like something left behind by a serial killer!

I didn't test much on the softie tank.

For sps and lps I pay particular attention to alk and magnesium.

Norman, when do you react. How low does your Mg or Alk go before you start trying to adjust and how much do you try and bring it up and how fast. :)

what caught my attention was the version made for females. it supposed to be some arm in a hugging position. but anyhow, i was looking for an opportunity to post those photos :p

norman, do you still dose the tank daily?

If I see alk low by .2meq/L I'll bump it back up right away. Lately I've been trying to keep alk at 3.7 meq/L.

Mg changes slowly. I probably should calculate the consumption and set up an automatic dosing system to keep it stable. In practice, I have a rough idea of when I'll check Mg. I like to catch it while it's still in the 1300's. I'll bump it to 1350-1400 in one shot when I make adjustments.

Some people say they don't test and they just eyeball the tank. I don't think I can distinguish alk to .2meq/L just by looking at the coral. Maybe some people can.

Other people might be keeping mostly softies, and with those you have a lot of wiggle room for alk levels. Different for sps. Like Jeremy said, stuff can start dieing if you don't maintain alk for 3 days.

I think by the time you see symptoms of low Mg in your corals, it can be too late to save them. LPS will show tissue recession, and polyps start coming loose from their skeletons.

Thanks Norman. I'm always worried about large bumps in anything. Do you use Randy's Mg receipe (magflakes and epsom salts) ? If so, what would be a ball park amount to boost say a 100g tank by 100... say 1300 to 1400 ?

I really aught to take this up in a chemistry forum but I like looking at those pillows :)

Jeepers I found an Calculator: http://home.comcast.net/~jdieck1/chemcalc.html

I use Randys Mag Recipe which I picked from the list and I have to use THIS MUCH?

806.4 ml; 27.2 fl oz; 161.2 tsp

Wow.

I use the calculator on Bulkreefsupply for my calculations. Sure, I can manually do it, but why reinvent the wheel?

Seems like the same one I used on a different page. I'm just making sure that I have to use ...what like 2 pints of the stuff to raise it 100. Looks like that Lack of Mg in my Reef Crystals is really gonna get expensive.

-Adrian

You shouldn't be using Just Epsom salts... if my understanding is correct... something bad about doing that which I forget. If we lived in the snow the mag-flakes would be cheap but the shipping gets a little expensive.
EDIT: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-07/rhf/index.php#14 It's sulfate build up that you get with only Epsom salts.
