Spoiling Question

Anyone know how long Roti feast & Oyster feast last after opening? I bought both of mine a month ago, and they now have a slight odor - kinda like a mild hint of sauerkraut. They've smelled relatively odorless before recently, I've kept 'em refrigerated, and they are still around a month away from the Best Before date. Should I just discontinue use, or is this normal?

I was wondering the same thing. I have some oyster feast in the fridge. Smells the same as a new one, but the due date is next week. I been using it the hell out of it in the pass few days. So far, corals looks ok.

I have never heard any reports of any of our products "spoiling" prior to the best before date. If you've kept it in the fridge it should be just fine. I'm not sure why the smell of sauerkraut, I've never gotten the smell from them (or rather my noise has never connected the smell with them). In fact, I have never gotten a report of spoiled Arcti-Pods, even after the best before :) I keep two bottles of every batch we've ever produced, even the initial test batches.

Are you going to the meeting this weekend? What size bottle? If your going, bring it and I'll swap it for a new bottle.

Most our products last beyond the "best before" by at least a month.

So how long is it "safe" to use a bottle past it's best before date? I use a very, very, very little amount in my tiny tanks and would never be able to use a whole bottle before the best before date.

Thanks,
Jay

I'm wondering the same thing too. And Gresham, don't worry, I'll still be using Reef Nutrition so long as my tank stays up ;). It's just that my tank is so sparsely stocked, that I've not been able to use even half the 6 oz Arcti-Pods bottle in 3 months.

Wow, that's great customer service, GreshamH

Yeah, I'll be at the next meeting, but I'll be a bit late. I can probably find you by asking around.

Thanks!

That is a question with no answer due to the millions of variables that present themselves. Typically at least a month but if improperly cared for in the CoC (chain of custody) that time can be cut way down.

We are working on a 2oz bottle for people in your shows :)

Thanks for the info Gresham, I'm still using the bottles you sent me! BTW, I just recently added a scooter blenny and am looking to provide him (and the rest of the tank) a continuous source of live food. Will the blenny take to Tigger Pods, or should I stick with Arcti Pods?

First, thanks again for the RN raffle donation. It was what I was really hoping to win and I did! Feeding your fish tiger pods is a fun visual. They behave very differently with live food than dead food. I have a new Royal Gramma (since the LFS tour) and he is still shy and hangs out in a "cave"on the side of the tank. He actually came out a fair bit when I added the TP.

On topic...I had a big bottle of OF which I forgot outside overnight a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure if it went bad or not, so I kept it. Comparing to the new bottle, the scent is identical, but it is just a tad bit darker (which may be batch to batch variation). I'm sure I at the very least, cut it's shelf life down, but for now it seems to be fine. All my corals respond to it the same.

should be fine if during the night. I doubt it will cut the best before down at all :)

Thanks for the ArctiPods replacement, Gresham. I've been using 'em after warming up the corals with a bit of Roti & OysterFeast. They've also been doin' a pretty good job at keeping the fish fed. From the looks of it, I can probably use ArctiPods as its own fish meal.

BTW, if I can recall correctly, weren't you working on a report/study to determine the optimal amount of times to feed your coral during a week. It's the one where you compared feeding corals everyday to overfeeding humans. Any new updates?

I've pretty much been feeding my corals everyday and was wondering if it's even worth it.
