You could put a barrier between them or a towel over the "infected" tank, etc. Something to mitigate the spray from the HOB, like a localized cover/piece of cardboard maybe a fan. Those are nice lights on the QT tanks. Mine is a $5 led.
Rules of Thumb are only intended to guide you until you know enough about the topic to understand all the exceptions. Re: buckets and air stones - totally different beast. Just put a bucket on your floor with an air stone in it and look at all the water spray around the bucket on your floor. Lower water level, lids, etc all help. Who knows how much etc. My glass lid is covered in water spray from the sponge filter, so a side by side tank is clearly not the best idea. As long as you at least think about it and not put tank transfer buckets right next to each other. I am sure the distance between tanks follows the rules of diminishing returns.
