Finally some one comes out with something that used to cost $$$$... A variable speed controller for the fans in your canopy at a cheap price!!!
I have to credit Jake at Reef Builders for turning me onto this fine new product...Reef Builders- Hands on with the Silent Air: a solution for managing aquarium heat

MCU Research launches Silent Air..

Silent Air Electronic Fan Controller
The Silent AirTM is a breakthrough in aquarium cooling. It can power up to eight 12V computer-style fans, dramatically reducing noise while increasing cooling efficiency.

The temperature sensor can be used wet or dry- submerged for sump cooling or dry for canopy lighting.

Variable Speed Fan Controller for Sumps and Canopy Lighting.

The Low Cost Alternative to a Chiller.

Supports up to 8 Computer-Style 12VDC Muffin Fans.

Super Quiet: 35% Reduction in Fan Noise at 90% Power Level.

Fans completely Shut Off at 76ºF.

Wet or Dry Temperature Sensor included- Can be Submerged in Sump or Mounted in Lighting Hood.

Dual Temperature Range, Switch Selectable: 76-82°F (Sump Mode) 76-90°F (Canopy Mode)

Accepts Standard Banana Jack Connectors (Available at Radio Shack, etc) or Twist Lock with bare wires.

Includes Controller, Power Supply, Temperature Sensor, and Hookup Instructions.
Only place to get them is through Fins Reef as of now...

I know. If it wasn't so late I'd be calling Brian to get me one

Yanno, that product doesn't look too shabby.

Fan's are one of the reasons I don't like canopies, you need them, if anything for reduction of moisture and as a result mold build up. The heat issue is just another one to get around as well. Plus who really wants to hear that noise of whirring fans? Sure you could put a POT in line with your fans and make them quiet, but what if you need them moving air at full speed?

While I dislike the lack of controls and settings, the fact that it does have a tank and canopy setting is nice, I was wondering how that temperature sensor worked, now if it had two of them one for the tank and the canopy... ;)

Finally the price, while I think my AC3 has some sort of expansion that can control DC signals (aquasurf perhaps), I know it's gotta be more than this by a lot!

Just want to know how this thing can reduce the fan noise. If it just make the fan running at a lower speed to reduce noise, the fan wouldn't push as much air as it suppose to right??

To me buying a good fan is the key. I'm one of those weird people that like to hear some kind of noise from the tank. If it's too quiet, I freak out (wondering what the hell happen to the tank LOL) ..

The temperature sensor is the key to the controller, as it varies the DC output to slow the fans down, and you're absolutely right it wouldn't push as much air, but it's the same thing vs blasting your car AC vs having a mild output, what is needed the most? If it's really hot then it'll ramp the fans up and pull maximum air, if it's not that hot, maybe a trickle of air will be pulled out because you don't need that much fan action.

I know what you mean, when I turned my skimmer off a few nights ago, my tank was too damn quiet and I had to check all my vortechs, my return, etc just to make sure the bugger is working! :D

I would be interested in how you like it after you try it.

The one on Reef Builders will be in their booth at BAYMAC. Stop on by and check it out. Other Reef Builder post items will also be on display :)

I'm working on getting one for the raffle s well

Just confirmed that Fins Reef will be donating one to BAYMAC :)
