Welder ?

Miller and Lincoln TIG welders will do the job (MIG will also work). Make sure to use 100% argon gas.......oh you mean you're looking for someone to weld for you? Hahahaha :D

Actually good question. I need someone that can spot weld/tack brass or bronze (not sure which it is). Any leads would be appriciated. I'm in the Vallejo area but will travel for this.

Jim - Is this something you can bring to someone or do you need them to come to you? Design Construction in Martinez does great work and they do aluminum. You'd need to bring it to them or have them fab it there for you. They are a bit pricy but the quality is worth it.

If you need someone to come to you I can ask some of the rig welders where I work if you want. These guys are all certified welders. I'd just have to find one set up for aluminum. I have no personal experience with these guys either but I know they have to certify frequently out here and their welds are x-ray'd for quality assurance. Have no idea what you'd be looking at for price either.

Gregory - I'm no expert by any means but don't you braze bronze and brass? If you don't care too much about how it looks I can help you out in Martinez :) We have a set-up in our Martinez shop that I can use. I'd want to go over and practice a little first though. It's been a few years since I have worked with brass. I'm pretty sure Design can do that for you too if you need it to look nice.

Thanks Charlie,

I should have prefaced the original posting by saying I need a light rack made out of aluminum for my setup. I have rendered drawings that i could send you to give to one of your welers if they're interested. I'm out in Millbrae by the way. :D

Charlie -

Thanks for the offer. Not sure if it's brass or bronze. It's an old candelabra that weighs a ton. One of the arms broke off flush with the body.
If you'd take a look at it I'd be greatful.

BTW- don't you braze meat? :)

Jim - I'll PM you with my e-mail address. Send me your drawings and I'll drop them off at Design Construction on Monday. They'll work up a quote that I can send back to you.

Generations old family heirloom with enormous sentimental value? Sure, no problem. I won't even need to practice first!

IIRC those metals should mix OK but I'll ask one of the guys in the shop to be sure. It'd just be a matter of how close the rod matches the existing metal. Can you send me a pic?

It typically looks and tastes more like charcoal when I get done with it :) I don't know that you'd call that brazing (or braising) but it sure looks like I cooked it with a torch.

I had to go Google brazing after all that - I guess it's called "braze welding" so it really is welding :)

Pop rivets and silver silicone will get you there.

You might consider erector-set style construction.

Bolts instead of welding is one win.
But I think a bigger win is being able to take it apart and modify it at a later date as needed.

Now you are talking!!! 80/20 for the win, and I ain't talking no 80:20 rule.

MY God that's beautiful!

Thanks for the reminder....there's been some drama lately and I completely forgot about this. PM me with a contact number so we can setup a date/time or I can bring to the meeting next week. Meanwhile I'll get a pic put up.
