Our mission

What kind of algae do you all have in your fuge?

Now that I have a larger proper fuge I am wondering what types of Macro's people run in their refugiums.

Right now all I have a little ball of Chaeto in there.

Please share!

Thanks,
Jay

Trying my darndest to keep the chaeto alive. It hasn't grown since I added it in November.

Other than that, I have a mass of halimeda that I'm trying to thin out.

I use chaeto as well. I used to have mangroves in the sump, but they don't really do well there and they drop leaves, etc.

Halimeda will suck up all your calcium! (Apparently most aragonite is actually halimeda!)

Try better fuge lights for the chaeto. If you stick them in your main tank...it will grow fast (but also shadow your corals) but you might want to do it anyway to give it a boost.

Thanks Vince. I'm actually tearing out the chaeto this weekend, in an attempt to save my hard corals and BTA. I'm also dosing Mg for the timebeing.

I figured Cheato was the macro of choice, just wondering if there is some other wondorous macro out there I don't know about.
Thanks!

Thanks!

In terms of looks, or efficiency with regards to nutrient export?
If for the latter, than chaeto burns all else IIRC :)

And parrot fish poop! :D

I have chaeto myself that acts like a filter floss in between comparements, it grows like gangbusters with a regular Lowes/HD "Daylight" bulb. Also have Caulerpa prolifera which also grows pretty damn good... then again could be lots of nutriets too :D

I have chaeto, C prolifera, and a red flattened, with fine branching macro that is growing about as fast as the chaeto. The red is also in the main and it does not attach itself directly like the C. prolifera. If anyone would like some red let me know and I will bring it to the April meeting. Erin shared it with me in February.

Currently my fuge is getting sun from the window only. I will have to get a light as the path of direct sun moves away.

Fuge is a 12 gallon Eclipse tank that I drilled and plumbed. A gate valve diverts water from the return pump and gravity back to tank.

Porous live rock piled high in the corner of the tank supports the mangrove.
