How did your tanks survive the quake? I was worried that I would have water splash out of mine since yesterday's quake was a bit of a shaker. I was also worried about the HOB filter.
 
Didn’t feel anything but wondering if my smoke detector did as it was triggered about hour after for no reason-and the skimmer cup was nearly full this morning from being nearly empty.. coincidence-maybe..
 
On topic I wonder who actually straps down their tanks for earthquake loss prevention? Or just relying on insurance..I never have with small or large tanks. I want them to be able to move or slide a bit on the floor if needed..Walls tend to move a lot more than the floors during quakes normally especially higher up. If I lag bolted straps into studs securing my large tank it would probably snap, crack or pull out the stud from wall with very little movement! Small under 20 gallons or taller skinny tanks maybe beneficial ? Thankfully my tanks are on concrete slab with solid bedrock below which helps deflect movement during quakes.. knocking on wood atm anything’s possible!

I dont even have earthquake insurance.. Feels like we are sitting on a ticking bomb.. Maybe time to spend that 3k for another may-be-useful-in-future insurance!

As soon as I got the alert, I did run to check on my tank! so many things that can go wrong in this hobby
 
I am here in San Jose, and the only thing that woke me up is my phone telling me after the quake happened. I did run down and check all the tanks, and they were fine, and this morning I had less than normal skimmer activity..... so maybe I need more quakes... my tank likes them.

I don't have my 30, 37, or 90 strapped. I asked here when first setting up and was advised against it.

Strapping IME leads to bad things. You want the stand to move, and the tank with it. Earthquake lips help stands a lot!
 
I was sleeping my wife woke me up and said earthquake same time my phone alerted me.

She felt it. I may have felt it lmao but I was in that half awake state semi out of it. Granted first thought came to mind was tanks. Yet I didn't see or hear anything in the house moving so I went back to sleep.

That would have been. My thoughts provided you have a stable stand thats not something janky lol. I could envision strap to wall possibly being worse than aquarium and on the stand moving as a unit.

I could also envision the potential problem would be if aquarium and stand separating. If stand had a lip if that was what ur referring to. I could see that being a big benefit over say a stand on a completely flat surface that would be easier to shift.off stand.

This is all in my head of course images only. Not from experience like I expect you have.

I have my stands tethered to studs in the wall, but the tanks still just sit on them. I should have used industrial velcro underneath the bottom rims… I even have a pack but was too excited to fill the tank up and forgot to use it.

During this quake I felt the floor wiggle. I thought something heavy fell but I didn’t hear a noise, and then heard a little creaking and saw my tanks water sloshing a little, but nothing actually happened

So that made me curious, since despite the nice mattresses, you should still be able to feel the shaking right and left, so I am assuming your home setup looks like this.

[We felt it in Walnut Creek, and our earthquake alarm woke us up 30 seconds before the shake].
