external liquid level sensors

anyone have experience with these external liquid level sensors? they don't seem to be optical, but i could be wrong. i'm looking for an externaly mounted liquid level sensor with an opaque container.

Another option could be an untrasonic transducer. Multiple options out there.

I've used both. I have not found them to be easy to get working. Particularly they aren't going to measure minor fluctuations, and getting them tuned to the specific container I found to be a PITA.

I was hoping to use them as a backup float sensor, but eventually gave up.

They certainly do work though, but the use-case probably matters a lot. For an ATO it wasn't accurate enough. As a dosing container measurer, that's exactly one of the things I was planning on trying again. You can also find complete measurement circuits for that online, including on aliexpress

Yes, I’m hoping to use it on holding container. In searching @ReyDeFarts suggestion of ultrasonic, I found waterproof ultrasonic distance measurement sensor. Maybe use this?

Yup. That should work. A great DIY option to incorporate into an Arduino or RasPi project. Especially being able to program/automate a pump.

Related to @ReyDeFarts point, what are you expecting to connect this sensor to? For my use-case, I have a bunch of ESP32s that these can be used with, and there's some stock ESPHome recipes one can use in combination with Home Assistant.

I’ve no idea. Thought it would be like plugging in a float sensor. Thanks for the info, I’ll do some reading.
