Anyone here have one?

The wife and I run the Mobius App, and so far love the app. Originally I was hopping Ecotech or AI made a skimmer pump that I could retrofit to the Reef Octopus, but no luck.

The Nyos EQ skimmers are Mobius, Apex, and Neptune compatible, I did see the RedSea skimmer, and oof those are money. Granted the Nyos isn't cheap either. What grabbed my attention on the Nyos though is the ability to run two different skim rates. You can run a daytime schedule to skimmer more, and reduced power to skim less in the evening. Or in my case not go nuts in the dead of night. The 160 is $629, so not something I am jumping into with out lots of research.

My other option which is much cheaper is the Simplicty 240DC @ $319. I know lots of people run them, and are happy with them. But it will only be effective half of the day... if that even matters, as it seems my tank's bios waste seems most actrive at night.

So basically a $300 difference for app control.

Thoughts? Tech vs Basic Function
 
What's you fish bioload like? Like how many fish and types?

I have a nyos 120 skimmer rated for up to 125 gallons max.


Light Bioload: Up to 125 gallons.
Medium Bioload: Up to 75 gallons.
Heavy Bioload: Up to 50 gallons.

If you don't have alot of fish it maybe sufficient. Otherwise it would be underpowered

I also have another skimmer that might work. I just need to check to see which one it is and rating
 
This is what I can tell you about skimmers. I thought about upgrading years and years ago as I was running the same atb ac skimmer for hella long. Out of all the research that I’ve done. I’ve came to the conclusion that all higher end skimmers are fairly the same. The magic is in the pump. Almost all body shapes are the same. It’s the throat size that matters and the length. I’ve modded my old skimmers to work like a newer models with a gate valve and air valve. Other than that it’s just the controllable dc pump. Which is really nice. But not a must if you know how to tune your skimmer. I see that you pulled your skimmer 6”. I can tell you. 99% of skimmers like to be 8-9” depth. The manufacturer will tell you the happiest depth for that skimmer. So what’s my moral to the story ? Don’t give up on what you got. Read learn then mod it. It will get you very far. Don’t just throw money at something. Cuz you be into your aquarium for 10k super fast.

My bioload as of right now I would say is medium, as almost all of our fish are young. But that will change, as my wife wants at least three more fish. One of them being a purple tang, I am trying to convince her to go with a white tail, as I have read the purple tang can be mean SOB.

And we have just barely started putting corals in, the tank is leaning towards being SPS dominant.

you are correct the Reef Octopus INT-2000 likes 8-9" depth, but at 8" it gets stupid excited at night and will pump out 10+ gallons of water. And this is despite all my parameters being ok. And the only thing we changed in our tank is the introduction of phyto for the Copepods.

I did look at getting RO's DC pump, which is app controllable as well. It is $400 for just the pump.

I will say the nice thing about the modern skimmers with DC pumps is they free up space in the sump.

Dc pump won’t change the overflow at night. It’s the phytoplankton that you’re adding. The skimmer is doing what it’s meant to do. You’re the problem. You want to add fatty elements and not have the skimmer do it’s job. Put the skimmer on a timer and shut it off at night. Let the aquarium settle then turn it back on.
 
I don't think phyto is the issue if the skimmer is going berserk later in the evening. All the organics related should be mopped up re: phyto once the skimmer is back on over the next few hours. What time is feeding? If that is later in the day and then lights out-that can be an issue as the organics can last hours and then when the PH comes down enough-spikes a nasty combo.
What is your PH range low-high?



I do agree with @Turkeysammich that a root cause would be good to know before throwing down 400+ on a new skimmer. Alternatively you can see if someone has a skimmer currently not in use to see if problem repeats. Also setting your current skimmer on a timer at night until it does break is an alterative as well.

Food usually makes the skimmer not skim well. So you’re probably right about the phyto. Although, I still don’t think it’s the skimmers fault. Either it’s dialed too high. ( super wet skimming ) or something is being added. Or shoot. The skimmer just isn’t broken in yet. Like he didn’t wash it out before he put it in and it’s only been a week since it’s been in there. Skimmers need a break in period. Residue from whatever will make a skimmer act super funky

What I read was that it wasn't fine, then it was ok, and then it wasn't again. So I concur we are getting at the same opinion of skimmers do what they do -but something changed in that interim-a change in daily feeding time or a change of type of food perhaps?
