They are probably increasing feed rates to speed up growth so the fish gets to market quicker (at the expensive of concentrated waste). Also there is no regulation on fish food.
They have to artificially make the fish look orange through the food using astaxanthin.. Then theres the lice growing on the fish which requires chemicals in the feed to control the lice. There is a documentary of all this somewhere. Anyway bottom line, you have to be crazy to eat farmed salmon. Any salmon that looks orange is farmed (especially at sushi restaurants).

It does not sound too bad - but as a pescetarian, I am still in camp wild-caught seafood.

Astaxanthin is a11-13 potent red-orange carotenoid antioxidant found in algae and seafood, known for reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. It supports cardiovascular, eye, and cognitive health, with studies using daily dosages of \(4-18 \text{ mg}\) to improve skin elasticity, eye fatigue, and immune function. While generally safe, it can cause stomach pain or increased bowel movements.

So the idea is that is actually healthy to ingest astaxanthin then?

watch the documentary, it'll open your eyes. The amount of unregulated toxic chemicals they feed to the farmed salman is insane. I dunno how dangerous the coloring agent is, but they are now required to put that in labels. But thats just one problem. There are many other chemicals used to treat the caged salmons.

I remember this documentary if I remember right some of the major politicians had stakes in the fish farming companies.. Also not to mention all the antibiotics they feed to the fish due to all the infections from overcrowding..
