Years ago it was time to buy a new car. I had a honda civic with 180K miles, great condition, did all the routine maintenance. The blue book value was way low since it was at least 14 years old, but running. I had heard my aunt recently had her car repossessed. I thought I would do a good deed and just give it to her. I think I could have sold it for 2K. I thought this would be great since she will have a reliable car with no car payment. Fast forward six months I asked how it was going. Turns out she used it as a trade in for another car. Ugh. Part of me wanted to rage at how stupid a a move that was. Then I realized if I truly give something away, I have given up all control over what they do with it.

While this situation sucks, it is not unexpected and part of the risk you take when giving something to a stranger. Hopefully, they did what they promised to do with it.

Personally, If I decide to give things away I could care less what they do with it. You did me a favor to clear up space. Thats where the buck stops.
Keep it and use it? Ideal.
Sell it? You must need the money reallll bad, all good.
Throw it away? You are my garbage man. Thanks for picking my trash!

I usually offer free things here on BAR first. If no takers after a week then I'll post on FB.
for the record, if you are going to dispose of any IM tanks, I am happy to be your rubbish person =)

I think if you give it away no-strings, it’s gone. I see people on here get upset on a regular basis when they give something away and aren’t happy with what happens next. It’s like they have some unwritten/unspoken rule in their head that is getting violated, or that they still feel like they sort of own it still. I think getting upset this way isn’t good for anyone, including the person getting upset.

Now, if you had an agreement and they lied about it, that’s a different story. Then the person is a liar, and that might be worth getting upset about if they are in your community. Still not getting upset about the stuff, but rather the dishonesty.

I think if you’re giving away stuff on FB Marketplace to someone you don’t know, you are just going to have to come to terms with the fact that you have no control/claim/right to care what they do with it.

But he said he didn't give them away no strings attached. Agreement was not to sell.
Was it confirmed that they were sold, though? Or are we just rallying our torches and pitchforks over the fact that he was ghosted?

Either way - still agree with @JVU - if you are going to give stuff to random people on facebook, you need to come to terms with the fact that it's gone and they are going to do what they want with it. If you aren't comfortable with that, or don't feel like they're trustworthy - don't give it away. When you give something away, it's no longer yours. I just see this in very simple terms, I guess.

Overall, I think it's unethical.

@SupraSaltyReefer he was going to reuse for a farm tank rather than reselling as promised. These are live rocks and I wanted to help somebody reuse them, skip the cycling period. I can easily store in my backyard along with 300lbs of dry marco rocks already in the corner.

@Chrism1330 I think he's a BAR member because within 2 hours of the post, he sent a picture of rocks that clearly aren't mine.

@iani @Kensington Reefer not exposing anybody, it's karma, it'll come around. especially he runs a fish business

@clownvan I have an IM20g for you. hamster chewed inside silicon, but the seam is unaffected. If you want to reseal, i have silicone. If you want me to reseal it, it'll be done in 3 weeks.

@JVU There is string attached. Asked not to resell

@derek_SR I'm not losing any sleep
