300 Gallon Tank Substrate Media Poll

Smaller crushed coral, maybe you could use a siphon, but the larger crushed coral, I have never successfully cleaned it without have to stir up the crushed coral. Not cleaning your crushed coral is like telling someone to not clean your sand. So, if you’re in that camp, sure, don’t touch it.

300 Gallon Tank Substrate Media Poll

Reasons why I don’t like to use crushed coral for substrate anymore. 1. Crushed coral, IMO, is as bad or worse a detritus sink as sand. It’s very difficult to clean and does not work with siphoning. You will need to physically stir it up. 2. It will scratch any tank, obviously acrylic more so...

Trident in need of frequent calibration

By the book, it is not the correct way, but the calibration fluid from my experience is not always accurate with the values printed on the bottle. I have been calibrating using salifert values with tank water and calibrating trident with those values for a while now. The ABC reagents should be...

    MD’s 50 Gallon Low Boy

Instead of painting you could always just use a black backing so you can removed if you ever want to. This one is just PVC and using static cling. There are other vinyl ones with adhesive if you prefer. XCNO Aquarium Background Static Cling Black Fish Tank Background Wallpaper Fish Tank...

Trident in need of frequent calibration

It’s sounds like the first calibration was wrong. I’ve found that the calibration solution they provide is wildly inconsistent and I’ve stopped using it years ago. I just test my water with Salifert and calibrate to that when the trident seems to be off, which is once or twice a year. For the...

Reef Expertise? Rate yourself out of 10!

You’ll never get the right answer unless someone actually documented/logged every coral they’ve ever purchased and it’s status which I highly doubt anyone has actually done. I’d guess the actually percentage of death under 1 year is pretty high, especially acro and torch fans. You’re probably...

    Michael's 300 In Vegas

Don’t believe them when they say you don’t need three gaskets. I have three marine modular overflows running right now and had five running at one point. Every single one leaked or had some salt creep that did not have a gasket between the OF box and tank glass in addition the two gaskets...

    MD’s 50 Gallon Low Boy

I’ve seen many a low boy drilled without problems. More than I can count on one hand.

    MD’s 50 Gallon Low Boy

Drill baby, drill! I prefer a cleaner look without wires and plumbing where possible. Besides, you can always buy another second tank if you want to make changes. Who wouldn’t want another tank running? :p

iCon’s IM 112 EXT Midnight Edition

UV from the sun is rough on plastics and PVC that doesn’t have UV resistant. Get a box for it otherwise that housing will probably fall apart in a year or two.

Flow Questions for experienced acropora keepers

Indirect flow is pretty important especially when things start to grow and getting flow between branches becomes more difficult. Flow is how all oxygen and nutrients are brought to coral and how waste is removed. Both flow and light are important and which is more important could probably be...

    Randy’s Innovative Marine 75 Ext

It’s going both ways. It’s on a Tonga branch that is mounted at an angle. Has plenty of light there (350-400 PAR), so maybe is just growing with the “flow.” ;)

Candy Corals Blazing Rainbow - I honestly don’t know why this doesn’t make its rounds and get in more SPS collectors hands. For me, it been one of the heartiest acros I’ve had and it has great colors! I got the original frag back in June of 2019, so I’ve had it a while, but when I started the...

Neptune Trident NP and new DOS!

all depends on what that little bottle is for and where it goes and if the manifold looks the same. ;)

Neptune Trident NP and new DOS!

Not technically. I’m sure like any conglomerate, they have separate financial statements since they are likely individual companies under a parent company. Which means they probably “pay” each other on paper.
