Obtaining unrelated coral colonies for spawning experiment

Yes, this would probably make things easier to start off. However I've read (in an article by J. Craggs iirc) that there is some degree of plasticity here, and corals from one region can sync up to a different regions' seasonal changes.

Obtaining unrelated coral colonies for spawning experiment

Also, I'm mainly interested in corals that are simultaneous hermaphrodites at first, since I don't currently have the capability to reliably identify the sex of gonochoric species.

Obtaining unrelated coral colonies for spawning experiment

To be clear, I'm not saying cloned corals can't spawn and reproduce in general, most probably can. I'm saying that two corals which are clones of a common mother colony likely cannot fertilize each other. For example, from a section about home aquarium coral spawning in Rich Ross's recent...

Obtaining unrelated coral colonies for spawning experiment

This one might be a little out there, but here goes. I recently set up a coral spawning tank with a reef-pi which mimics the seasonal solar, lunar and temperature changes of an indo-pacific reef. It is currently going through the ugly phase, and in the meantime I'm planning out which corals to...

    Free Pajama Cardinalfish

Yea, let's give it a day or two to reduce stress. I'm offering food every day, hopefully it'll bounce back. I'll let you know how things are going on Wednesday.

    Free Pajama Cardinalfish

Yes, still available! It seems to be doing a little better, swimming around and not hiding all day. Still not eating much though.

    Free Pajama Cardinalfish

I'm giving away a Pajama Cardinalfish that I pulled from my display tank because it was getting bullied by two other Pajamas. It's been in a quarantine tank for two days now. Full disclosure, it is not eating much and hides inside a PVC tube all the time. I don't think it has any common disease...

    Making my own salt water?

I struggled a lot at the beginning when buying saltwater from various LFSs. I never found a place that sold water with consistent enough salinity or parameters, so I started making my own and the health/growth of my corals improved by leaps and bounds. Good job for taking what I consider a very...

    Aquascape opinions/advice

Thanks! Yea I thought of the same thing about the front rock. There's some space to move the whole structure back a bit, but I'm going to test it with a cleaning magnet. If it's still an issue I'm going to chisel off a little from the front. I'm not planning on any fast growing, invasive corals...

    Aquascape opinions/advice

Alright, here's what I came up with. I really liked the arches I originally had, so I modified them a bit and added the shelf pieces up top to create more of a plateau. I think this will give more space for acropora up top while also leaving space for some LPS/softies towards the bottom (want...

    Aquascape opinions/advice

Thanks for the replies. I like it so I think I'm going to go for it and maybe drill some frag plug holes after the cement sets. When I said "a lot of acropora" I now realize that's open to interpretation. What I meant was I would like this tank to be acropora dominant, not that I want to have...

    Aquascape opinions/advice

Hey everyone! I'm starting up an SPS dominant Red Sea Reefer 170 which hopefully will be home to a lot of acropora. I just finished putting together the aquascape (not cemented yet) and thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions for improvement. This is the first time I've built a custom...

Free Duncan, Hollywood Stunner Chalice, and Palythoa Frags

Hey BARs, Just fragged some of my corals for the first time, and I need to get rid of them soon (small 10 gallon tank). If you want to give me a few bucks it would be very welcome, but not required. Local pickup only in Livermore. Anyone interested? Frags: 3 Duncan Frags (1-3 polyps ea) 5...
