What do you use for mechanical detritus removal?

I had considered filter socks, but my sump is a temporary (Hey, it's only been a decade) glass tank with a plastic storage bin in it and the main tank drains are just PVC pipes dumping into the storage bin. My one attempt at adding a really fine mesh filter sock resulting in a flood (it's...

Building new reef - new member

I recommend that you get a good skimmer. It looks like your tank does not have overflows, so a Hang on Back skimmer would work for you. I use this on my qt tank and it's pretty good. https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/aquamaxx-cones-hob-hang-on-back-protein-skimmer.html It's $300. If that gives you...

How to add a 2nd sump to an existing sump?

How did you solve this? My sump is a 29 G glass tank with a plastic storage bin shoved in it. It was temporary. That's 10 years ago. I had a nice sump but I made the mistake of buying my tank with someone else's DIY stand which used so much wood that I couldn't physically maneuver the sump...

The wet side of my MP-40 died, considering replacing with a Gyre pump ... recommendations?

Never. In fact I never once cleaned the wet side. I just assumed ... well, it's wet and it's spinning. Surely it is self cleaning! Yes, naive and I'm now paying the price for it. Well, it sounds like the gyre pumps have low reliability, which is something I can't stand in equipment after so...

The wet side of my MP-40 died, considering replacing with a Gyre pump ... recommendations?

Well it started making a terrible sound so I noticed that the inside and outside were no longer aligned, then the dry side just fell down. So I reattached it and soon it fell off again after some rattling. So I removed the wet side to look at it and decided to clean the glass side and it was...

The wet side of my MP-40 died, considering replacing with a Gyre pump ... recommendations?

Are gyre pump still the thing the cool kids do now? My MP-40 wet side failed. They are like $90 to replace. Although cheaper than a new gyre pump, I am entertaining the idea of getting one as an upgrade. I may still fix the MP-40 and relocate it to another place on the tank. Any thoughts on a...

Lol, I will also bring a few BTAs! I am bringing my kids, but only one of us will pick. Ie one picker, 2 observers. Due to my kids being cooped inside for way too long.

    battery backup options

I bought a generator 13 years ago to power our freezer in case the power went out since that freezer held all the breast milk for when my kids were babies. The generator is still in the box in my shed. I think since I've never put gas in it, it should be OK. However, I don't think I even have...

    battery backup options

Well real quick you can buy some Penn Plax B11 battery powered air pump. I'll give an Amazon link, but shop around; https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Operated-Aquarium-Automatic-Gallons/dp/B076LF63BY They use two D-cell batteries and will run probably at least 8 hours or longer. They are simply...

Almost cause a (small) flood in the living room...

buy some flood alarms, they're like I dunno $10-$15. They will scream their heads off when water reaches (and bridges) the sensors. I've had way way too many floods in my reefing life.

Vincerama2's 180 gallon "Wifebane" reef project!

I bought some Reef Flux ... OMG! It works! However, there is still some in the tank. Strands and roots of it. I think it has to do with it being shaded. I'm going to do a water change and probably get more of it to finish the job before it can take a foothold again. Will likely remove offending...

Do you guys use a filter sock or roller mat?

OK thanks guys, that's some stuff to think about, especially the increased maintenance. And I ahve three bottles of "Reef Flux" to attack the algae, but have been trying to see if manually picking it out and not feeding the tank would work...but of course as long as any scrap of that algae...
