Any other azoox nuts on here?

Loving it! I assume you'll slap a Vortech on the right side? AU was awesome. Went to Lord Howe Island for a week, lots of diving/snorkeling, really nice reefs with endemic and unusual fish that you can't see on reefs anywhere else in the world.

Making a light fixture. Pipe bender

I made a light hanger from 3/4" pipe. It is hard as hell to bend "nice looking" if you've never done it before. IMO it looks way nicer than a 90 degree bend. I coated mine with 3 layers of Rusto flat white. Looks good, no worries about saltwater getting on it. Best part is you can run...

    What kinda algae is this?

If it's what Patrick is referring to it's hydroids. Hard to tell without a close up shot. I kinda doubt we have the same thing though, because the hydroids I have only grow in really really heavily fed systems like for jellies and NPS corals. They thrive on rotifers, phyto, and baby brine.

    That aquascape is nice, Joost!

Holding my hand out--Anyone have a frag of "Purple Chalice Sponge?"

I heard this stuff is like Aiptasia once it gets going. No? If you can get more than one piece I'll take some too!

Anyone have their tank on a hardwood floor?

    I like using Dri-Dek. http://reefbuilders.com/2010/04/28/dridek-rubber-matting-save-carpet-hardwood-possibly-marriage/

    Black banded cat shark?

They grow big and fast. Should be full size within about 2 years, 3' long or so. They are powerful and big big messy feeders. In a reef tank realistically large enough for them you probably won't even see them very often. They generally hide under rocks during the day.

Calcium you use for your tank?

More or less. 76g of CaCl2 anhydrous contains as much calcium as 100g of CaCl2 dihydrate. The caveat here is that anhydrous calcium chloride will absorb water from the air pretty quickly and make weighing it accurately very difficult. Easiest thing to do is dissolve it all in water right...

    GFO and Softies

I've heard tons of things. :D Can't say how true any of it is though. Never tried the stuff m'self. Dosing ethanol/vinegar in my kalkwasser seems way cheaper and easier to me.

    GFO and Softies

Use smaller amounts. What's the tank volume to GFO volume ratio? You said it's HC, right? This stuff really sucks the PO4 out of the water. I had a Capnella look near death after putting GFO on a mantis tank for 48 hours. Took the GFO off, good as new within 48 hours again. That was...

    GFO and Softies

Sudden drops in PO4 can cause them to close up. Try removing the GFO and see what happens.

Coral to donate for high school project?

Hi everyone, thanks for all the generous offers. John (JAR) donated a really great looking Seriatopora today that will fill the bill. I'll post here after we get some data!

Coral to donate for high school project?

Not likely. He'll probably be doing "dead" or "not dead" observations every day for several weeks. But it would be simple enough to do this ourselves if we wanted to. What coral do you think would be worth looking at? We have MS-222 I could give you if you wanted to try it yourself, too.

Coral to donate for high school project?

Thanks for the responses everyone. Yes, it is for sure an interesting project especially for a HS sophomore to undertake! When he treats with MS-222 he'll be pulling the frags out and adding them to a dish, so the MS-222 will only be "active" for a few minutes. I'll of course report back...

Coral to donate for high school project?

Hi guys, a local high school sophomore is interested in doing a study to test the effect of MS-222 (a fish anesthetic) on coral tissue. I promised I'd help him out with advice, info, etc. If anybody has a coral you're no longer interested in that you'd be willing to donate to this project...

Food grade caustic soda (lye) anyone?

Soapmaking stores should have it too. Dunno if it's food grade though. I wrote an article for AAOLM that should be popping up in the next few days about regenerating GFO with lye. It's about 10-20 x cheaper than replacing it.

    Two Part dosing and Ph

If you want to increase the potency of your kalkwasser, try dissolving the powder in vinegar first if you're not already.

    Monterey Bay Aquarium

They just closed it down a couple weeks ago. Something to do with the tiles that line the exhibit needing to be refurbished if I got the gist of it correctly.

Does this seem crazy to anyone else?

I was wondering about that. You got some maxi-minis from there a while back, right Ian?

Does this seem crazy to anyone else?

"Eligible to purchase"? I expect minimum orders from wholesalers, but not retailers. Is this typical nowadays? This guarantees I will never even peruse the site again--was strongly considering purchasing a few but what's the point? Maybe if there was further explanation I would...
