Suggestion for mature / maturing tank

Frag your colonies and use those funds to buy new coral! I am starting out with a mixed reef but expect to go SPS dominant over time. When I do that I will somehow find room to start a softie tank. My wife is not aware of this longer term plan . . .

    LF RODI storage suggestions

Similar to Umrigark, I have two 55 gallon barrels in my garage. One for RODI and one for saltwater...

    Anthias recommendation?

I have two Bimacs which I put through copper + Metro medicated quarantine with some chromis. The male chased around the female in the display tank for a few days but there is only modest aggression now. Overall aggression level in my tank is low. I plan to get a third Bimac in the new year...

    Lanthanum Chloride Success (so far)

First two times I dosed lanthanum chloride I did so into a 10 micron sock. Third time I did so into my Reefmat. The next morning my young yellow tang was dead. I found out that day that there was a crease in the fleece roller which allowed water to get through without filtering. Now I dose...

Gyres: recommendations and LF one (buy, borrow)

@Bruce What kind of powerheads are wavemakers do you use instead? The MP line from Vortech to something else?

I dont test my water parameters:(

Two part is super convenient and much more economical than AFR. Either should work fine though since they are tried and true. For two part use ESV hooked up to dosers. That allows me to dose small amounts multiple time every day. I adjust dosing based on results of water testing. If I need...

    Molly as QT

I recently got done putting two Bimac Anthias through QT. They did just fine with copper at 2.5ppm along with the recommended dose of Metroplex every two days. I had 7 chromis with them who did not do as well---three died the first night and another the second night (confirmed Uronema case...

Anyone ever bought fish from Petco.com?

Wow, the pricing on livestock on Petco right now is pretty nuts. Looks like I have to get my QT tank running again!

    Adding phytoplankton

There are many videos on YouTube which explain the process. Above is a picture of my setup. Here are the key components: 1) For vessels I use 2000ml borosilicate beakers. The reason why is because they have measurements on the beaker, built in pouring snout which makes it easy to harvest...

    Adding phytoplankton

I culture my own phytoplankton. Super easy to do. I control timing of the harvest by increasing or decreasing how much light the culture gets from the window it sits in front of. I harvest every 7-14 days depending on light exposure. Takes me 10-15 minutes max to harvest and reset the culture...

In tank cannister filter thing from reef beef?

Bruce, what do you typically use the polisher for? Is it worthwhile to get if I run a RedSea Reefmat? I am thinking about getting the polisher since it can be used as a makeshift media reactor for activated carbon. Plus, I like the idea of super polished water after a tank cleaning.

Gravity top off options for red sea

I recently set up a RedSea 525. My first tank. I took out the built in ATO from the start since I needed room for a manifold which will run future equipment. The built in ATO takes up a lot of space. I also wanted to use a larger ATO reservoir so I can go a few weeks without a refill. I am...
