Complete Bonus/Ultra Coral List - 2024 (REVISED AS OF 11/14/24)

It's on the list; if it looks similar enough to be mistaken for it - or you're not sure if it's actually a different lineage - I think that's fine to count as bonus.

What do you guys use to test?

My 0.02: My issue is less "I don't like the Trident" and more "I want to have automated nitrate and phosphate testing". The Trident NP offers that, but the Trident is an awkward form factor, and I don't want to pay $700+ for what is (to me) comparatively minor convenience. Assuming that the...

And this is why caulerpa is banned

Article specifically calls out the possibility of a reef keeper introducing it: https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/san-diego-port-emergency-caulerpa-prolifera/

What do you guys use to test?

Main DT: Trident for alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium. Hanna HR Nitrate and ULR Phosphate for nitrate and phosphate. ICP test every couple months for trace element dosing correction. Coral QT system: Hanna alkalinity checker. Hanna HR Nitrate and ULR Phosphate for nitrate and phosphate. Don't...

Complete Bonus/Ultra Coral List - 2024 (REVISED AS OF 11/14/24)

@thephoreefer Can you post a picture when yours was bouncing? Never mind. @JVU it should look like this if it's bouncing; more like a blastomussa than a zoa:

Bonus/ultra corals for the 6/1 frag swap: what will you be bringing?

There's never been coral left over after a swap, so bring whatever you want (that's not on the banned list)!

Complete Bonus/Ultra Coral List - 2024 (REVISED AS OF 11/14/24)

This, unfortunately. There were a couple complaints we got about it never "re"bouncing and just looking like similar, lower-cost zoas. Split the difference and kept it on the list, but has to be bouncing at the time of swap.

Article series: the how, why, and whether-I-should of quarantine

Velvet still gives me nightmares. It killed every fish in my RSR250 in less than 48 hours, except for a watchman goby and an algae blenny (which, ironically, I still have both of them).

Article series: the how, why, and whether-I-should of quarantine

100%. I'm reasonably certain that my tank wipe (fish seemed healthy, then I had to transfer tanks due to a near seam blowout, then velvet cropped up a day later and wiped everything out) was due to the last fish I added. That sick feeling of watching my fish die one by one has never left me. I...

    Utility Sink - questions

Something like that should work. Alternately, they make hose thread x john guest (I think that's the right term?) fittings; I have one on the cold water line near my water heater.

    Calcium climbing with calcium reactor?

I've been using a calcium reactor as the alk source on my current tank since it's had coral in it. The alkalinity has been rock solid, minus a few fluctuations here and there when coral hit a growth spurt. However, my calcium has slowly (but continuously) been climbing over the last few months...

Article series: the how, why, and whether-I-should of quarantine

Part Five: General tips, tricks, and/or lessons I’ve learned the hard way Closing out this series, I thought I’d give an overview of some pieces of advice I wish I knew before starting this. In no particular order, they are: Patience is a virtue “Nothing good happens fast in a reef tank.”...

Article series: the how, why, and whether-I-should of quarantine

Part Four: Should I start a quarantined display tank? Starting off with a disclaimer: this section, by its very nature, is going to be highly subjective. This is because “Is QT worth it?” is a very subjective question influenced by lots of different considerations, and every person will value...

Article series: the how, why, and whether-I-should of quarantine

Part Three: Stony coral, snail shells, macroalgae, and other potential vectors of disease Some of the ways diseases get into your tank are obvious: an infected fish, contaminated water, etc. Some, however, are less obvious: that snail (or shrimp) you just added. A piece of stony coral...

Article series: the how, why, and whether-I-should of quarantine

Part Two: Preventing disease when adding fish to your tank: Observation versus quarantine versus management There are several, non-mutually-exclusive levels of disease prevention you can perform for fish you purchase before adding them to your tank. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, and...

Article series: the how, why, and whether-I-should of quarantine

Starting this off with a disclaimer: I think quarantine (QT), like many things in reefkeeping, is a matter of personal tolerance for risk and balancing your enjoyment of the hobby. This guide is not meant to be judgmental, or to argue people cannot have success in their tanks without QT. It’s...

    Vacation dosing

You could potentially set up a drip system, but that's cumbersome and not super precise (plus has the possibility of clogging if the alk cakes around the outlet). I'd suggest a dosing pump to be safe. There's the 2-head Jebao doser for $60, or - for $10 more - a wireless 4-head Jebao doser. I'm...
