Bestest ATO out there: give me opinions, help me not build one

Looking at it, I do think the tunze is pretty close to what I'm describing, with the networked pieces. I feel like for the price, one might as well buy a used full controller + ATO though? I guess with the used asterisk one could also try and find a used tunze... Yeah, that's what I'm afraid...

Bestest ATO out there: give me opinions, help me not build one

My Reefer 500 has the standard red sea gravity ATO. It takes up a lot of sump space, but I've always liked the concept and considered it very safe. Worst case scenario, a couple gallons get added, slowly because of the drip rate. Generally I've had a separate, electronic, reef-pi controller...

    Pressurized kalk reactor

Let's pretend kalk solution is fully saturated at 5g of Kalk in 1L of water. It's fully dissolved and couldn't take any more. What's the difference between: A. Put 10g of kalk in 1L of water, mixinn, draining all the water out over time, then adding another 1L of water and mixing the rest B...

    Pressurized kalk reactor

Good news is the general idea was successful! Continuing to ideate on contraptions to make these better, it seems like the views are: A. Doing a big mix gets things where people want B. Mix being stable stays stable C. Kalk stirrers have a compromise of needing to mix, but also let it...

Guide: Lanthanum Chloride dosing for Phosphate control

Maybe another basic question, but why drill into the skimmer body versus have the tube output directly at the skimmer water intake? The cheapest version being a rubber band holding it there. The slightly more advanced version would be 3d print a holder that fits around the inlet and holds the...

Guide: Lanthanum Chloride dosing for Phosphate control

Does LC get crusty/hard in the tubing? I'm curious how thin a dosing line one can use, and therefore how thin the hole could be.

    Free Pulsing Xenia

I do. Honestly a bit of a PITA because it grows well, and is non-trivial to get cleanly off rock or other things. It's at least much more difficult than grabbing a handful of chaeto and tossing it in the garbage. However, it looks cool if you look at it and/or leave the sump visible.

Switching to ESV from All for Reef

Frag tank: AFR + Kalk Main display: BRS 2-part, an occasional squirt of Mg which I never measure, and some AFR to help with various misc nutrients I've had a bit of the precipitate issue too, but have not had a huge issue for whatever reason. I'm not sure if it'd fix it, but my guess is the...

    Another rant on testing

As one more anecdotal report, I was having a lot of issues getting N&P to consistently measurable levels, despite 9x a day feedings from my avast of reef jerky (60 sec each feeding). Main negative was SPS looking pretty bleached and one chalice in particular starting to have tight skin. I...

Sep '24 - POTM - Show Me Your Polyps

Title: Polyp Forest Taken of my frag tank, Sep 25, with a pixel 7, no edits beyond cropping. Edit: oops, forgot the whole "DM the pic" thing. I just like the picture, doesn't need any award.

    Knock off / Clone MP10- MP-40

I really like the no cords aspect of the vortechs, and would be interested to hear how these work out. The suction cup aspect seems neat if it helps prevent a knock from destroying the dry side as it falls to the ground because you forgot to use a sticky cable holder. I feel a bit weird about a...

Not AFAIK. It would be cool. However it would also likely completely kill the use of the forum.

Guide: Lanthanum Chloride dosing for Phosphate control

Regarding the skimmer approach, is the benefit that the skimmer actually skims out the particulates or that it tries to heavily mix the LC with tank water before it could get back into the sump? I assume the answer is a bit of both, but I'm guessing the main benefit is that longer mix time. The...

Kay's Coral Cove long overdue introduction! About Us and our QT process!

Sounds very cool! I'd suggest putting links to all your things in the post. Eg it's not super clear what your website/Instagram/Facebook/non-BAR contact info is. For your QT process, does that imply all your corals arrive at once and all are kept for that time period? Meaning you acquire...

    Algae Identification and Solution?

What's your take on the medical implications of fenbenzadole being used in aquariums and eventually getting dumped into a drain? I ask in relationship to similar to the use of Cipro and antibiotics. Eg is it dangerous to do a smaller dose, building resistant things in the aquarium? Are we...

Fuzzy green mushrooms and orange discosomas

I'm unsure if the ones I gave to you included these. I had a bunch of different ones in those cages, and didn't really check rigorously. So might be the same :)

    65 gallon tank

This is really dangerous advice, but I also wonder if the future solution for smaller tanks might be lanthanum chloride. I never tried it, but it'd take basically no equipment space and a very small amount should make big changes. Maybe the future will be very heavy feeding + lanthanum chloride...

    65 gallon tank

I wonder how often fish eating corals is a side effect of fish being underfed. Certainly they eat coral in the wild, but if fed repeatedly through the day with a feeder, and fed a lot, I wonder how often they'd choose to bother coral. I've somehow gotten lucky with never having had that issue...
