What little thing in reefkeeping changed your life?

Not this club specifically, but meeting other hobbyists who like talking about tanks has been a huge help, and the same was true when I was into freshwater things.

    Who's cleaning their solar panels?

I know at least a few people who suddenly developed a concern around the high levels of contaminants in their spouse’s drinking water at the same time they started getting serious about their reef. Pulling all of your RO from under the kitchen sink is a pain, but apparently better than not...

    Who's cleaning their solar panels?

Do any of you have the ability to monitor portions of your array? Could you clean say half the panels and then do a same-time comparison? I tried to spray off my car, but there was still a LOT of ash on it. A sponge with no soap (ie minimal scrubbing) took off the vast majority, and soap got...

    Found: flashlight in sump

Worst I ever dealt with was an occasional shock and GFCI trip on a tank I used to service. After nearly a year of not being able to track this down (the shock did not always repeat, no oddly high stray voltage measured in the tank...still haven't figured that one out, there wasn't a ground...

    Coral bandsaw

Looks like you might have a solution with Mario. If not I have and recommend the Gryphon XL over the standard Gryphon. I have not used the Inland version, but I have used the standard Gryphon both for coral as well as at work on glass cutting projects. Most of the time it's fine, but if...

    Found: flashlight in sump

    1. While I would do a water change, run some polyfilter, etc. if you don't see any obvious signs this far out I would not panic and do anything drastic like say a 95% water change. A lot of awful things have been done to reef tanks (I lost a hose clamp in one and it basically dissolved to...

Any one have experience with a Dolabella Sea Hare?

I've had two. They make the poop factories that we call freshwater plecos look like amateurs. Then again, given how much algae they eat it has to go somewhere. The first decided to clean the algae off of my MP60 one day a month into its tenure and never left. It didn't spaghetti like a nem...

    Trying to resurrect a Kessil

If I remember correctly from the tour there (which was a ton of fun, thanks again to Kessil and the BAR organizers), it basically came down to "We tell you to clean them periodically and we mean it". They build up with dust, then they overheat. Assuming that overheating alone doesn't cook it...

    Apex after power loss

It’s another pierce of equipment, but I have a level sensor in the container my skimmer drains to as well as a too high sensor in my sump. Either will shut off the skimmer. You should be able to make It delay when the power comes up as well with lines above.

    Bubble Algae

My desjardini would eat bubble algae when I had one. Not sure about any of the others. Emerald crabs are the usual go-to and I’ll be adding some eventually. They occasionally develop a taste for other things, but that isn’t a frequent issue. Urchins eat all sorts of algae (tuxedo, rock boring...

    Fragging Zoas?

Zoas occasionally squirt out water like clams. It will go far enough that it might end up in your mouth or eyes. The cases of it ending up in the air that I've seen involve people literally boiling things, but there is definitely some slight mist that comes off of bandsaws as well. I have one...

    Electrical Help

If you wire them up correctly a GFCI can protect several downstream outlets. It's important to correct to the right set of terminals on the GFCI for this to be true, and they often have warning labels about this to help you out. It's one more step than making sure hot connects to hot and...

    Fragging Zoas?

First off, zoas or palys since they can be hard to tell apart, know that palytoxin is real. 99% of the time, probably more, it’s a non issue, but the time it is an issue is memorable. So, safety glasses, gloves if you have cuts on your hands, don’t touch your eyes. Soap and water on your hands...

    Electrical Help

Regardless of what code requires, I always use weather resistant outlets around aquariums. They don't cost much more, splashes happen, and I can't tell you how many corroded outlets I've seen around reef tanks. Also, if the outlets are going to be behind something, put the GFCI that the other...

    ATO Creation for $12?

They do make inexpensive waterproof float switches, just a matter of finding one. Potting it in would work too, but I wouldn’t go there unless you can’t find one premade.

    ATO Creation for $12?

To answer the basic question, yes, an ATO is just a float switch and a pump. Honestly other than not having Apex integration (why I don't have one), the Tunze Osmolator is the best approach I've seen, exempting perhaps that I'd prefer to see a mechanical valve at the outlet like the Neptune...

The long term short term - 170

I finally decided that manually knocking off the bryopsis is going to drive me nuts, so some flucon is on the way. In the meantime I'd like to start a DBTC with the zoa back in post #20. First however I need to get an ID on it. I know what it was sold to me as and I also know the person who...

MP10 shaft damage, should I be worried?

    1. If it's rusting I'd replace it, or just start using it in a freshwater tank. Ecotech is pretty good about a lot of things post warranty if you're the original owner, so reach out to them. 2. I ran an MP60 with 1/3 of the ceramic bushing missing for 4 years. I had to stick it on the steel...

    Deionization Resin question.

As to the above being a good deal, if you’re handy it is not difficult to plumb in an extra cartridge and do some rearranging. If you’re not then get exactly what you need up front.

    Free: wire wrap

Spare from a car project several years ago. This is 1/2" so you aren't going to fit a bunch of power cords in it, but it can be a nice way to hide dosing lines or sensor cords. I prefer different wire wrap now, and won't use it. Free, pick up only near Twin Peaks in SF.
